Professor of Sociology
Department of Sociology
Uppsala University, Sweden
https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/details/?positionId=512004

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with
a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct
education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a
long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the
individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one
of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000
students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8
billion.

The Department of Sociology at Uppsala University was founded in 1947
and is the oldest department of sociology in Sweden. The Department
offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies in sociology.
Undergraduate and graduate education is also offered in social
psychology as well as sociology with a focus on work, organisation and
human resource management.

We are seeking a highly qualified sociological researcher. Empirical
research is considered a particularly valuable qualification for this
position. Merits in empirical research may relate to one or more
recognised areas of study within sociology.

Duties: Overall responsibility for research and education at all levels
in the field of sociology and for development of the same. The Faculty's
ambition is that approximately half of working time should be devoted to
one's own research. Furthermore, there is a possibility of a paid
sabbatical period after a longer employment.

Active research and research communication as well as participation,
planning and management of research projects (including applications for
research funding). Assignments of administrative nature, including
management assignments at departmental and other levels within Uppsala
University, may also arise.

Required qualifications: A person who has demonstrated both research and
teaching expertise is qualified for appointment as a professor (Swedish
Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3). Research expertise
must have been demonstrated by independent research contributions and by
achievements of very high quality by international standards. The
applicant must have demonstrated expertise in planning, initiating,
leading and developing research; an ability to obtain research funding
in competition; and well-documented expertise in supervising doctoral
students.

A general eligibility requirement in Section 5 of the Appointment
Regulations for Uppsala University (AO) is that the applicant must have
the ability to cooperate and otherwise meet the requirements for
suitability needed to perform the duties well. Furthermore, according to
Section 31 of the Appointment Regulations, the research expertise must
have been demonstrated by independent research contributions and by the
applicant's high-quality merits, as evaluated internationally. The
applicant shall have demonstrated skill in the planning, initiation,
leadership and development of research and the ability to obtain
research grants in competition, as well as well-documented skills in
supervising doctoral studies.

Teaching expertise must be demonstrated by an extensive educational
portfolio. Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented
expertise in supervision at all levels, and must otherwise meet the
requirements laid down in the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala
University (Section 32) and the Faculty of Social Sciences Supplementary
Guidelines (Section 2b).

The teaching expertise, research expertise and professional skill must
be relevant to the subject matter of the position and the duties that
the position will involve.

To meet the qualification requirements, applicants must have a
documented ability to teach in Swedish or English. An appointee with a
command of only one of these languages upon appointment must, within two
years, be able to teach in the other language as well.

As stipulated in the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, one
general qualification required for teaching staff is that applicants
must be able to work with other people and otherwise meet the demands of
suitability required to perform their duties well.

Assessment criteria: research, management expertise and teaching
expertise

The assessment criteria used in the appointment of a teacher at Uppsala
University will be the degree of the expertise required as a
qualification for employment.

In the appointment of this professorship, significance will be assigned
to research expertise, management expertise, and teaching expertise.
When ranking eligible applicants, emphasis will primarily be placed on
research expertise and secondly on leadership and teaching expertise.
Equal care will be given to the evaluation of all three assessment
criteria. The assessment criteria will be weighted so that an applicant
judged to be significantly more qualified in terms of leadership and
teaching expertise than a slightly more skilled applicant in terms of
research expertise can be ranked ahead of the latter.

Research expertise: In assessing research expertise, research quality
will be the primary consideration. The comprehensiveness of the
research, primarily in terms of its depth and breadth, shall also be
assigned significance. Furthermore, the ability to establish and
maintain local, national and international research networks and to
competitively obtain external funding for research shall be assigned
significance. The applicant's contributions to the international and
national research community will be assessed, inter alia, in terms of
the quality and volume of scholarly publications in the most relevant
publication channels in the field. The criterion regarding international
qualifications shall be assessed with consideration of the nature of the
subject and its specific conditions. Research expertise must have been
demonstrated through independent research contributions that both
qualitatively and quantitatively considerably exceed that which is
required for docent status.

Empirical research is regarded as a particularly valuable qualification
for this appointment. Such qualifications may relate to one or more
recognised areas of study within sociology.

The applicant must normally have been principal supervisor of at least
one doctoral student up to and including the thesis defence, unless
there are special grounds otherwise.

Management expertise is demonstrated by the ability to manage operations
and staff to effectively achieve common goals. Experience with
responsibility at departmental or similar level, and contributing to its
development is considered a qualification. Other collegial
responsibilities, demonstrated by undertaking other managerial and/or
administrative assignments, participation in committees/working groups
or otherwise demonstrating commitment to the internal work of a
department or university are also considered a qualification.

Teaching expertise: Teaching expertise will be evaluated as carefully as
research expertise. When assessing teaching expertise, the primary
consideration will be teaching quality. The scope of teaching
experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be taken into
account. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to
plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as the
ability to link teaching to research, based on research in the
discipline in question, in didactics, and in higher education is
assigned significance. It is considered meritorious for the applicant to
be able to teach in both Swedish and English. When the University
appoints new teachers, the successful candidates will be those who,
based on a qualitative overall assessment of competence and expertise,
are deemed to have the best conditions for carrying out and developing
the duties in question and for positively contributing to the
development of the organisation.

Qualifications must be documented in a manner that permits assessment
of the quality and scope of the merits in question. The application must
state the area(s) of sociology in which the applicant considers him or
herself particularly qualified.

The Recruitment Committee may make use of interviews, trial lectures and
references. Applicants must therefore provide a list of reference
persons who can discuss the applicant’s professional proficiency and the
personal qualities of relevance to the position, e.g., team-working
abilities, leadership abilities and working methods.

Personal circumstances (parental leave, part-time work due to childcare,
trade union duties, military service etc.) which may be considered for
the purposes of assessing applicant qualifications should be mentioned
in the statement of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae).
