Indian and Chinese Diaspora:
Comparative Perspectives
By Dr. Sadananda Sahoo,
School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies, IGNOU
Abstract: Diasporas are a defining phenomenon in the globalised world today. They are the people who live outside their home country due to various push or pull factors that are political-economic, historical and environmental. In this paper, I have taken a queue from the Indian scholarship that is increasingly trying to make comparison with that of China on various issues related to economic growth, employment and diaspora investment. The first part of this presentation will provide the historical and political-economic factors that lead to the emergence of the two largest diaspora and their global spread. The second part will highlight some comparative aspects that provide insights the dynamics of engagement of between diaspora and home country. The argument is that while the engagement with the Chinese diaspora is mostly considered as economic success, Indian diaspora is cultural and identity based. It’s rather the labour diaspora who have been more financial support to India than the entrepreneurial diaspora. The complexity of engagement with diaspora is a reflection of ideological, cultural as well as identity based. The presentation will throw light on the how these factors influence each other in the context of both diasporas.
