Most of us simply follow , practice and teach / preach such things without knowing the deeper meanings . 

Same is the case with “ Deergha sumangali Bhava”

BTW,,Performed Ayush Homam to all my grand children in Skandagiri temple mantapam , Padmaraonagar , Secunderabad.

Although a non believer , following the traditions , out of compulsions

This is an incident that relates back to several years. When Sri Maha Periyava was giving darshan, four or five scholars who had come for darshan, were seated there. During the course of His conversation Periyava asked the scholars, “When devotees prostrate to me I say, ‘Narayana’ ‘Narayana’ and bless them. What do you, householders, say by the way of blessing?”
We say, “Deergha Ayushman Bhavah Soumya” and give our blessings. That is the tradition."
"What does that mean?"
“It means, ‘May you live long, prosperously!’”
Periyava questioned each and every scholar separately. Everyone gave the same reply. Periyava was silent for a while. Then He said, “What all of you have given is not the correct interpretation.”
The scholars were taken aback. They were all very learned and renowned and had the Shironmani title. Even those who know only a little Sanskrit could explain the meaning of ‘Deergha Ayushman Bhavah Soumya’. It was but a simple phrase. But Periyava felt that it was an incorrect explanation.
“Shall I tell you?”
The scholars were all ears.
‘Ayushman is one of the twenty seven Yogas. Bhava is one of the eleven Karanas. Budha—Wednesday—is Soumya Vasaram among the weekdays. These three, that is, when the Ayushman Yoga conjoins Bhava Karana on a Soumyavasara or Wednesday, such a day is said to be extremely auspicious. So, the blessing really means, ‘I wish you all the merits that occur when these three factors conjoin.’
All the scholars got up together and did prostrations to Sri Maha Periyava.
The blessing that the scholars with titles of Shironmani and Vidya Vachaspati had been had been repeating mechanically until then, what accurate and deeper meaning had this enlightened one pointed out!
