A man used to give $1,000 per month to a beggar. This continued for quite some time. One day, he gave him only $750. The beggar was surprised, but thought, “$750 is still better than nothing,” and left.
A month later, the man gave him only $500. The beggar was shocked and said, “Before, you used to give me $1,000, then it became $750, and now $500. Why? Can I know the reason?”
The man replied, “Before, all my children were young and I was financially comfortable, so I gave you $1,000. Then my daughter grew up and entered university, and the tuition fees were high, so I started giving you $750. Now, my second son has also entered university, and the expenses have increased, so I gave you $500.”
The beggar asked, “How many children do you have?”
The man replied, “Four.”
The beggar said angrily, “And you’re going to educate all of them at my expense?!”
Sometimes, people see kindness and good deeds as their right, not as a generosity from you.
