FSSAI has 1,500+ employees.
A ₹300 crore annual budget. Offices in every state.
An IAS is heading this defunct organisation.
Yet fake milk reaches our children. Adulterated oil reaches our kitchens. Chemical paneer reaches our plates.
Right from Vegetables, fruits and icecreams every edible item is adulterated
The infrastructure exists. The enforcement does not. Every month we pay them . Who knows the retirees get pensions also which is again throwing good money after. bad money
A regulator that can not regulate is just an expensive liability
Have we heard any in recent times that FSSAI had booked X No of persons or firms and had  them punished ?????
Who cares....

FSSAI initiates prosecutions against Food Business Operators (FBOs) for violating the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, including selling unsafe, sub-standard, or misbranded food, and operating without a license. Since April 1, 2023, over 1,411 prosecution cases have been initiated, with penalties ranging from fines up to ₹10 lakh to imprisonment.

Aspects of FSSAI Prosecutions

Process: If a violation is not punishable by imprisonment, the Designated Officer (DO) directs the Food Safety Officer to file a complaint with an Adjudicating Officer for fines. Serious offences, such as selling unsafe food, can lead to criminal prosecution.

Violations: Common causes for action include producing, storing, or selling unsafe, sub-standard, or misbranded food.

Penalties:

Sub-standard food: Penalty up to ₹5 lakh.

Misleading advertisements: Penalty up to ₹10 lakh.

Unsafe food: Punishment can include imprisonment and fines, or, in cases leading to death, imprisonment for life and a fine of not less than ₹10 lakh.

Improvement Notices: Designated Officers may serve improvement notices for non-compliance, with failure to comply potentially leading to license suspension or cancellation.

Recent Enforcement: Intense surveillance drives, such as those targeting nutraceutical manufacturers in Himachal Pradesh, have been conducted to ensure compliance.
