Broad Culture: Vixen as Canvas and Muse is an exhibition that brings
together diverse artists to explore the theme of the “broad” in our
culture and history. Taken literally, artwork in the show will
encompass a broad range of mediums, including oil paintings, body
jewelry, photography, mixed media and handmade clothing, all inspired
by the resurgence of burlesque and tattooing as a means of self-
expression and individuality. In this exhibit the modern vixen is seen
as both muse and canvas and all of the artists draw inspiration from
them in their respective mediums. Some of the artists see the women as
artists' models in the traditional sense while others portray these
women as trailblazers of sorts throughout history, from the cabaret
sirens of the early 1900s to the pin up girls of the 40s and 50s.
Broad Culture features the work of emerging as well as established
local artists. In conjunction with the show, members of The Kansas
City Society of Burlesque will provide a brief performance.
