TWO-DIMENSIONAL DYNAMIC GROUND RESPONSE ANALYSIS, FOR STRUCTURAL
STABILITY, DURING SEVERE SEISMIC CONDITIONS
By Engineer Anjum Zafar, CEng

The methods of 1-dimensional Ground Response Analysis <GRA>, for
structural stability, during severe seismic condition, are useful for
LEVEL or Gently Sloped sites, with PARALLEL material boundaries. Such
conditions are not uncommon and 1-dimensional analyses are being
widely used in Seismic Design. However, for several other problems of
interest, the assumptions of 1-dimensional wave propagation are not
acceptable. In earthquake-affected districts of AJK, base of all the
structures was properly leveled and compacted beforehand. Sloping or
irregular ground surfaces, presence of heavy structures or stiff,
embedded structures, or walls and tunnels all of these importantly
require 2-dimensional (sometimes 3-dimensional) analysis. But in all
those problems where 1-dimension is considerably greater than others
can often be treated as 2-dimensional plan strain problems:::
In Seismic Structures, we have a number of methods that can be applied
to 2-dimensional dynamic response problems. However, it is worth-
mentioning here that techniques for the solution of such problems have
been developed by using BOTH Frequency –Domain (also called Complex
Response) Methods and Time-Domain also called Direct Integration)
Methods. In Seismic Structures practice, all these techniques have
been applied to several practical problems. Aside from this, BOTH 2-
dimensional and 3-dimensional dynamic response and soil-structure
interaction problems are most commonly solved using dynamic Finite
Element Analysis:::<>:::
