DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DUCTILITY & ELASTICITY, by Engineer Anjum Zafar,
CEng:::Seismic Structures Specialist <>
DUCTILITY is the ability of a metal to undergo cold PLASTIC
DEFORMATION Without Breaking (Fracture/ or Rupture), esp. by pulling
in COLD Drawing (e.g. Copper, MILD Steel):::
---> It must be remembered that ELASTICITY is OPPOSITE to DUCTILITY
(PLASTIC DEFORMATION). ELASTICITY is the property of materials that
RETURN them to their ORIGINAL Shape & Size, after Loading & Deflection
(for instance, RUBBER is a good ELASTIC material; but NOT a DUCTILE
one... because it RETURNS to its ORIGINAL position). While, on the
other hand, DUCTILE materials (e.g. Copper, MILD Steel are DUCTILE...
because they NEVER return to their ORIGINAL position after
deformation:::<>:::
