The Society for Ethics in Nigeria is an organisation dedicated to the
promotion of positive national change in attitude from amoral ethics to
positive government, business, work ethics and youth matters in the
country. Our aim is to engender the ethics consciousness and instil it
in the polity, for a meaningful national, community and individual
development in Nigeria.
It is a product of the search for a workable solution to the myriads of
problems that has continued to beset the Nigerian state. It is the
search for that common factor devoid of religion, ethnic, professional,
sex, age, politics, and any other conceivable difference by which, the
reason for our not-too-impressive performance as a nation to date can
be taken in context and a holistic and permanent solution found; such
that would guarantee not only the continuous growth of the nation, but
the peace and security of the citizens now and in the future as well.
OUR BELIEFS
It is our belief that the solution to Nigeria's developmental
problems lies with the Nigerian. Our differences as a multi-ethnic
society can only be relegated to the background by undertaking those
things, which transcend the factors that has always put distrust and
suspicions amongst us.
These issues like ethnicity, religion, level of illiteracy and so on,
have been played upon by a large number of unscrupulous leaders so much
so that competence, integrity, professionalism, honesty, and all the
qualities necessary for good leadership and true growth in the nation,
have been sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity and hypocrisy.
The Society for Ethics In Nigeria (SEIN) believes that as long as
ethnicity, political expediency, sex, or any other considerations like
regional grouping or state-of-origin are used as criteria for
appointment into leadership positions rather than experience,
integrity, performance, honesty and merit, the country will continue to
flounder, and no meaningful development will be possible as has been
proved beyond any doubt, this past 46years after independence.
The Society believes a National Ethics Policy is the answer. Ethics is
the single common denominator by which the Nigerian, irrespective of
age, sex, political orientation, ethnic grouping, religion, academic
achievement, occupation or office held can be assessed objectively. The
ethical leader is an objective, selfless and fair leader whose work is
for the good of all, irrespective of race, ethnic grouping, religion or
sex. He/She is a person of high integrity and honesty who need not come
from a particular background to satisfy the yearnings of the Nigerian.
With ethics, we will be able to mould our leaders, officers, employers
and individuals to the desired standards for the service of the
fatherland.
OUR VISION
The Society's vision is "to encourage and grow the organisation,
man, woman and child of integrity, honesty, dedication, discipline and
commitment to our national aspirations and ideals, through ethical
training, exhibition and practice of the good and right - leadership,
business and work attitudes at all times."
OUR PURPOSE
Our purpose and long-term direction is the vigorous pursuit of the
adoption of a national policy on ethics at all levels of governance and
leadership in the country. We shall work towards creating the enabling
laws for ethics in all aspects of our national life, through trainings,
seminar, conferences and publications. We shall teach and propagate the
gospel of ethics until it becomes part and parcel of our national life.
THE NIGERIAN SITUATION TODAY
Nigeria today is a country under siege from fellow Nigerians. Perpetual
economic downturn, unbridled corruption, insecurity, fraud, political
assassinations, embezzlements, ethnic crises, armed robbery, area
boys' syndrome, election malpractices, examination malpractices,
ritual killings, cultism, and many others assail us.
Our situation today is such that although we are one of the major oil
producing countries in the world, we are classified as one of the
poorest countries with tendency to explode at any moment. It has been
predicted by the international community that Nigeria will be a failed
state in 15years if the present trend of events continue.
SHOULD THE PRESENT TREND BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE? DON'T YOU BELIEVE
SOMETHING CAN BE DONE TO CHANGE THE STATUS QUO? DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD
ALL BE LEFT TO GOVERNMENT? CAN YOU COUNT HOW MANY TIMES GOVERNMENT HAS
FAILED US? WON'T YOU RATHER JOIN US AND CONTRIBUTE MEANINGFULLY?
