Submissions are now open for the 2026 SAS Carol R. Ember Book Prize. This prize recognizes books whose significant theoretical, empirical, or methodological contributions to anthropology embody the mission of SAS to advance the scientific study of human societies.
Single- or multi-authored books are eligible, but edited volumes are not eligible. Submissions must have a publication date of 2025 or 2026 to be eligible for the 2026 award. Any submitted book is ineligible for submission to future competitions. There is no monetary award associated with the prize.
To submit your work, one electronic copy of your book must be sent to the addresses below. No other materials beyond the book itself will be considered. Your publisher may be willing to supply an electronic copy of your book for the committee's review. A committee consisting of the SAS-elected senior board members will evaluate all submitted books.
The SAS Carol R. Ember Book Prize recognizes original scholarly contributions. Books that make substantive use of AI-generated or AI-assisted writing, analysis, interpretation, or argumentation are not eligible for consideration.
The winner will be announced at the SAS business meeting at the 2026 AAA Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO, on Thursday Nov 19 (11:45 AM - 12:45 PM). The winner will be notified in advance of the business meeting.
Send all submissions, no later than the deadline of October 9, 2026, to the SAS Awards Committee:
