With Florida State University restarting the Anthropology PhD Program, we are also expanding our faculty! This cycle, we are looking to hire two cultural anthropologists: one Tenure-Track faculty member and one Specialized Teaching faculty member. The Department of Anthropology at Florida State University is recruiting two Cultural Anthropologists to join our vibrant and growing department. We invite applications for a Tenure Track Cultural Anthropology (Assistant Professor) position and a Specialized Teaching Faculty (Teaching Faculty I) position.
Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology
Responsibilities
The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology. Our department is in an unprecedented period of growth as we reopen our PhD program. We seek applicants whose expertise complement and expand the existing strengths of the faculty. Preferred candidates will demonstrate a research focus that is both theoretically and methodologically grounded, and that tackles important global issues and contemporary challenges. Specific research and geographic focus are open.
Of particular interest are individuals whose research utilizes a mixed-method approach for understanding issues related to climate and the Anthropocene, migration and mobility, and/or social inequalities. Candidates whose research program has the potential to attract funding from the NSF, NIH, and other external sources are especially encouraged to apply.
This position is on a 9-month contract. Tenure-line faculty teach a 2-2 load, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, conduct research, and contribute to the shared governance of the department and university. Primary teaching duties will include courses required for the undergraduate major, courses that satisfy the general education undergraduate requirements and combined upper-division/graduate courses on topics in the candidate's research area.
Qualifications
Applicants must minimally hold a Ph.D. from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in Anthropology. We seek a colleague with a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, an interest in incorporating students into research opportunities, and an active externally-funded research program.
Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to motivate and inspire students, are essential.

The Department of Anthropology, with the support of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, is expanding its role in maintaining Florida State University as one of the top Public Carnegie Research I universities in the country. The Department is undergoing a phase of dynamic growth and adding new faculty in our newly reopened PhD program. We seek scholars who enhance applied learning and advance research and scholarly activities. Ideal candidates will organize and capitalize on key partnerships across campus and the city and increase community building locally, regionally, and/or globally. Given our commitment to community engagement and engaged scholarship we seek to appoint faculty who are deeply embedded in the communities they study.

Teaching Faculty in Cultural Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology at Florida State University invites applications for a Specialized Teaching Faculty position in Cultural Anthropology beginning in August 2025. We are seeking a dynamic colleague with expertise in applied anthropology, broadly defined, in fields such as business anthropology, community health, environmental anthropology, UX research, or related areas. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses that both complement and expand our current offerings, while also contributing to the growth and development of our PhD program. Our graduate program emphasizes biocultural anthropology and scientific methodological approaches, and we welcome applicants who can enhance its interdisciplinary reach. The geographic focus for this position is open.
This is a 12-month renewable contract position at the rank of Teaching Faculty I, with opportunities for rank advancement and promotion. Teaching faculty at FSU typically carry a 4-4-2 teaching load and are expected to participate in the shared governance of the department and university. Teaching expectations may be adjusted based on class size and service commitments. Primary responsibilities include teaching required courses for the undergraduate major, as well as upper-division and graduate courses aligned with the candidate’s area of expertise.
Required Qualifications:
●     Doctorate in Anthropology
●     Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching cultural anthropology
Preferred Qualifications:
●     Evidence of excellence in teaching cultural anthropology
●     Experience in applied anthropology with the ability to prepare students for diverse career paths
●     Ability to develop relationships with community stakeholders to support applied MA theses and PhD dissertations
