Salvete, Romani -

I'm not sure if anyone's listening out there - but I thought I'd send out a question to everyone, as to what and even whether you are reading these days.

On Roman topics:
  • Tacitus, starting again on the Annals.  I tend to read in fits and starts; I picked up the Complete Tacitus in English some time back, and return to it for more reading as I am moved.

On Stoic topics:
  • I'm re-reading Musonius Rufus, Lectures and Sayings, Tr. King - Musonius was the teacher of Epictétus, and a fair-sized chunk of his lecturing survives.

On other topics:  Again, my reading tends to be all over the place - but:
  • Plain & Simple - Bender, Sue - a Berkeley woman's experiences living with the Amish (reminds me of summers in Oregon)
  • The Righteous Mind - Haidt, Jonathan - a psychologist's essay on how we think in terms of morality
What about you-all?  Quid legitis?

Salve Iohannes et salvete omnes,

I'm learning latin again by helping my son in his first year course!

As for reading, I'm browsing the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World.  If you haven't seen it, you are missing a true scholarly achievement.  The hard back book is very expensive, the most expensive book I ever bought at $300+, but there is an iPhone app version that costs under $30.

Salvete Omnes,

I'm reading parallel some scientific books on Roman topics:

Garrett G. Fagan "The Lure of the Arena - Social Psychology and the Crowd at the Roman Games"

Exhibition Catalog on the Battle at Harzhorn (there had just recently been the exhibition at the Landesmuseum in Braunschweig which I visited and where I had purchased the catalog)

Thomas Fischer "Die Armee der Caesaren" (new compendium on the Roman army)

Just got myself a new computer after the hard drive for my old one gave up living. Are there any books you all would recommend reading? Movies you'd suggest folks watch?

Hi Arnold,

If you specify which topic of Ancient Rome interests you most or if you are just generally interested in Ancient Rome than it would be easier to recommend anything because there are so many books around.

Regards

Nice to hear from all of you again - Cleopatra Aelia, Timave, Cassii Vespa - Si valetis, valeo.

Maxime, Aelia - there are LOTS of books on Rome and her history!  Not suprisingly; and fiction, besides.

Cassii - Are you a history reader?  Livy, Sallust, Tacitus, Suetonius, Polybius, Ammianus - !?  I've done pretty poorly myself - Caesar (Gallica), some of Livy, some of Ammianus Marcellinus, Sallust, and now some of Tacitus (although I hope to finish him up entirely since I have his opera omnia uno in volumine; I did read Sallust in Latin (and facing page English) a long time back, but he's the only historian I've ever tangled with in his own words; everything else has been translated.

Ave, amice. I'm glad you are reading Tacitus, he is one of my favorites! I don't know how much Latin you know, but a good choice for you, evenif you are a intermediate level, would be to read "Breviarium Ab Urbe Condita" by . His word order is quite simple and it's a very interesting History of Rome starting with Romulus. It ends with Emperor Valens.
As it's a work from a late author, so most academic tend to frown upon his work. But I loved it and it's one of the first books I read with my Latin tutor. Here is a link where you can find both Latin and English translation.

Ave, Tullii Tacite -
Say, Eutropius is fun reading.  My Latin is iffy (as perhaps you saw!) and so I certainly needs some practice, and what better way than to go thru a synopsis of Rome's history?  Thanks for the tip, and thanks for getting me back to the Forum Romanum and that wonderful, waiting library.
Vale!

Salve,

The only things I've read that fall into line with Ancient Rome have been:
  • Pankration, The Unchained Combat Sport of Ancient Greece by Jim Arvanitis
  • The History of Rome, Books 01 to 08 by Livy
  • Minimus I - Starting out in Latin by Barbara Bell

I know I read a translation of work by Marcus Tullius Cicero, but for the life of me I can't recall the title. That all said, Merry Christmas and happy new year.

Vale
