This week I would like to comment on your comments about the
readings.
First, as Beka implies, the overlapping authors as well as the
timeline, are not factors to be overlooked. They represent incremental
research that builds on replication and refining of hypotheses. Now, I
also agree that going from cognitive self-referential processes being
unique to them having a special location in the brain, there is
somewhat of a leap. Further, as Stuart and Lindsay point out, these
studies seem to making the “independent error” problem mentioned in
Vul, particularly with regard to the identification of “peak
locations”. Maybe we will clarify this better in our discussion
tomorrow.

I very much agree with Jenny’s discussion of the “default” baseline
state of the brain. This default state is described as one in which is
constantly engaged in self-referential thought; when the MPFC is
recruited it is the decrease with this baseline state what reflects a
cognitive process that is “self-related”. The parallels brought about
by Lindsay to vicarious processes in self-control are really
fascinating and an example of how these studies may inform our t
hinking about psychological processes examined at a behavioral or
cognitive level. We need to sharpen the “self” “other” distinctions
and their functions. It is possible that, as Camille mentions, the
evolutionary value of these concepts may override the “self” vs
“other” referents.

Really good comments. See you all tomorrow for a great discussion.
