Hello interested volunteers!

My name is Ashley Edgette and I am a co-director of the Social Justice
Gardens (SJG) program. SJG mainly works with the Mountain View
Elementary Community-Classroom Garden. Mountain View Community-
Classroom Garden is a space on the West-side of SLC where families,
students, and community members, who have historically been
marginalized from schools, can come together and be active members of
a community on school grounds.

At the garden, University of Utah & SLC high school students
collaborate with community members in harvesting, planting, building,
organizing events and planning meetings and teaching classrooms from
kindergarten to fifth grade on issues related to the greenhouse/
community garden project. We work with families and students to create
long term sustainability for SLC community gardens. Families,
teachers, children and students (like you!) are integral to building a
successful community space where access to healthy food and
sustainable growing practices thrive.

For August and September we will have community/volunteer gardening on
Friday evenings from 4 pm until 7:30 pm. Later in September we will
begin an after school gardening/healthy eating program for middle
school and elementary students for Friday afternoons, 1-3 pm. When the
weather cools down we will also have Saturday morning gardening. Our
first volunteer meeting/social is coming soon, so stay tuned for a
date and time!

Produce from the garden is used to supplement school lunches,
community events and to support families that participate as community
gardeners. SJG's partners include: the Bennion Service Center, Bend-in-
the-River, SEED, University of Utah Education & Biology Departments,
Wasatch Community Gardens and the U of U's Honors College.

The Mountain View Community-Classroom Garden is located on California
Avenue and Navajo St (1380 south and 1240 west) I enjoy biking to
Mountain View but there is also a bus that goes directly from the 1300
south TRAX station to Mountain View.

many thanks,
ashley
