Subject: Green unity in India

18 April 2026

Friends,

Greetings to you all from the India Greens Party,

On 15 April 2026, I had a chance meeting at the Press Club of India, New Delhi, with comrade Sandeep Pandey, who is associated with a Green initiative (party) linked to the Socialist Party (India). In our brief but meaningful conversation, we discussed the urgent need to bring India’s Green political formations closer together. Sandeep ji went a step further and suggested the possibility of a merger of all Green parties. I expressed my agreement in principle, while recognising that each of us would need to explore this idea within our respective organisations.

From the perspective of the India Greens Party, we are broadly in favour of Green unity. However, I will need to seek the approval of our Political Affairs Committee before taking this forward in a formal manner.

As far as I am aware, there are currently a few Green-oriented political formations active on the ground: the India Greens Party (pan-India), the Green Party associated with the Socialist Party-India (pan-India), the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party in Uttarakhand, and the Green Tamil Nadu Party in Tamil Nadu.

Of these, the India Greens Party and the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party are affiliated with the Asia Pacific Greens Federation and the Global Greens. These two parties have also participated in elections in the country. The Socialist Party (India) has also contested elections in the past but as Green Party associated to the Socialist Party (India) has yet to contest an election.

There are also references—primarily online—to entities such as the Indian National Green Party, the Indian Peoples Green Party, and the Green Party of India. However, there is little publicly available information about their organisational activity or leadership, and some may exist more on paper than in practice. There are unconfirmed reports that Rajasthan too has a Green party.

What stands out clearly is that multiple formations exist, each carrying similar ecological and diversity concerns, yet operating in isolation. Unlike countries such as Germany—where Alliance 90/The Greens emerged as a unified force—or Australia, where the Australian Greens consolidated state-level efforts into a national presence, India’s Green political space remains fragmented.

Globally, Green Politics did not begin as a single unified movement. In the United States, diverse state-level Green parties came together to form the Green Party of the United States—a federation that respects regional autonomy while providing a shared platform and coordinated national voice. Similar processes unfolded in Australia and across Europe and South America. At the global level, these national formations are further linked through platforms like their continent-level federations and finally through the Global Greens.

The lesson is both simple and profound: Green Politics matures not by dissolving regional identities, but by weaving them into a larger, value-driven collective—where diversity becomes strength, coordination builds credibility, and a unified national articulation emerges without erasing local roots.

The situation in India reflects a deeper reality: ecological political thought exists, but its national expression remains unformed. The future strength of Green Politics in our country will depend on whether these parallel efforts can converge into a common platform or a federated structure, rather than continuing as small, separate entities.

Let us, therefore, take a conscious step towards building a collective Green Voice in India—strong enough to make a meaningful political intervention.

We are here to change politics, not the climate.

I invite your reflections on this proposal. If there is agreement in principle, we may consider meeting in person at a mutually accessible location to take this dialogue forward.

With Green wishes,

Suresh Nautiyal
