Shakespeare in the Displacement Camps: The Story the War Could Not Cancel, Hani al-Salmy, June 21 2026
“Did
Shakespeare ever write a play suitable for children?” I smiled at the
question for a long moment, a smile tinged with both wonder and sadness.
For an instant, I imagined an impossible encounter between children
wrapped in fear beneath worn canvas tents and an English playwright who
had lived and died more than four centuries ago. I thought briefly,
running through Shakespeare’s tragedies in my mind, from Hamlet to
Macbeth, until a warmer thought emerged. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” I
replied. It was the closest thing to the spirit of childhood: enchanted
forests, mischievous fairies, intertwined dreams, and surprises that
invite laughter and delight .. I found myself thinking about
Shakespeare. Did he ever imagine, while writing in old London, that his
words would cross oceans and centuries to arrive in a Palestinian
displacement camp? Did he imagine that the fairies he released into
England’s green forests would one day find their way into the hearts of
children who fall asleep and wake to the sound of drones and
bombardment? Probably not. But true literature often accomplishes what
its creators never foresee. It crosses borders, languages, centuries,
and barbed-wire fences to reach those who need it most. Gradually, the
play ceased to be a simple activity. It became a sacred ritual, woven
into the fabric of the children’s daily lives. They memorized their
lines as faithfully as they memorized their mothers’ names. They
practiced songs and movements with infectious excitement, laughing
wholeheartedly whenever someone forgot a line or missed a cue. For the
first time in what felt like ages, the camp seemed to possess a genuine
appointment with happiness .. War may destroy a theater. It may flatten a
stage and scatter an audience. It may postpone a performance
indefinitely. But it cannot destroy a story. And stories, much like
children, always find a way to survive.

'If Not India and Indian, Then Who? If Not Now, Then When?' Palestine Appeals for Urgent Indian Aid, Kavya Dhume, 19/6/2016
New
Delhi: Appealing directly to the Indian government, media and youth,
Palestinian Ambassador Abdullah M.A. Abushawesh said urgent medical
assistance was required for a healthcare system collapsing amid
continuing Israeli attacks that have claimed 1,000 lives despite a
ceasefire .. Ambassador Abushawesh on June 19 urgently called on India
to send medical relief supplies and aid for the country’s devastated
healthcare system at a press conference. He said that Palestinians face a
“catastrophic” health crisis as a result of continued attacks by
Israel. “If not India and the Indian people, then who? And if not now, then when?”
he said, adding that “thousands of Palestinians” could be saved if only
they could secure timely aid .. "The state of Palestine calls upon the
international community, in
particular the government of India and humanitarian organisations,
medical institutions, civil society organisations and all other Indian
and international concerned parties to urgently act for the protection
of the Palestinian health care sector” .. Reminding the Indian public
and the government of their revolution against British colonisers, he
said it had aided Palestinians in the mid-1930s. He recalled Gandhi’s opposition to the partition of Palestine
and India’s recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, the
State of Palestine in 1988, and numerous Indian votes at the United
Nations supporting the two-state solution .. The ambassador also called on Indians to raise their voice
and awareness, individually and at the institutional level, about the
plight in Palestinian territories, especially the Occupied West Bank,
East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip

Mizrahi: One unspoken about aspect of Vance being tasked with schooling
Israel in public, rather than Trump: in the American system, the vice
president is next in line for power if the president, say, gets
assassinated. By assigning this role to Vance, Trump signals to Israel
that assassinating him will not help Israel. It is kind of an insurance
policy. And Israel is attacking Vance for the same reason: if Trump gets
incapacitated for any reason, they want to paint people's imagination
with Vance's supposed hostility to Israel and mark him as a primary
target for Zionist Hazard Removal (VIP). And if this sounds all to
conspiratorial and crazy, believe me; this moment is absolutely
existential for Zionism, and they will do whatever to preserve their
power. Nothing is beyond the pale, or impossible. Any sense of calm and
stability in the international system right now is fake. The ground is
shaking underneath the surface

Defending and building socialism under siege: Cuba’s new economic measures, June 19 2026
In
one of the most consequential economic policy announcements since the
Special Period of the 1990s, Cuba has unveiled a comprehensive package
of reforms designed to confront the island’s most severe economic crisis
in decades while preserving the socialist foundations of the
Revolution .. In the face of economic warfare, hybrid warfare,
sanctions, and threats of recolonization, Cuba continues to defend its
independence, sovereignty, and right to self-determination. The reforms
announced by the Extraordinary Plenum are best understood as part of
that struggle: strategic openings undertaken not from weakness, but from
a determination to preserve a revolutionary project that,
despite extraordinary adversity, remains committed to human dignity,
social justice, and the aspiration of building a society with all and
for the well-being of all.
