সুপারহিট, তবু কি সেই সম্মান পেলেন শরৎচন্দ্র?

One of Bengal's most prolific and popular novelists, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, was born on September 15, 1876, in Hooghly, Bengal Presidency, India. He was the child of Motilal Chattopadhyay and Bhubanmohini. He engaged himself in writing at a tender age. His earliest stories, Korel and Kashinath, are widely read even today.

Childhood and early life
Most of his childhood was spent at his uncle's house in Bhagalpur, Bihar. Due to the irregular jobs of his father, Motilal Chattopadhyay, the family was caught in poverty. His father wrote many stories, and it was believed that Sarat’s interest in writing was inherited from his father. As Sarat once remarked that he had inherited nothing except his restless spirit and a keen interest in literature from his father. His mother, Bhubanmohini, died in 1895, after which various other family members supported Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s family during hard times.

During his teenage years, he went head over heels for western writings of authors like Marie Corelli, Charles Dickens and Henry Wood that he went up to the extent of choosing his alias to be “St. C. Lara”. He was too daring and undaunting. Unfortunately, after clearing the University entrance exam, he failed to complete his higher studies due to the miserable financial state of his family.

He married Shanti Devi in 1906, and the couple had a son. Sadly in 1908, both his wife and son died in the plague. He was utterly shattered by the loss of his family. Therefore, he turned to books for solace. The subjects included sociology, history, philosophy, psychology, etc. But, due to health problems in 1909, he slowed down his hunger for reading.

However, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay remarried Mokshada, a young widow, in 1910, whom he renamed Hiranmoyee. He also taught her to read and write. He devoted his time to reading.

Career
In 1900, he associated himself with the Banali Estate in Bihar and later worked as an assistant to the Settlement Officer in the Santhal district settlement. In 1903, he wrote his first short story titled ‘Mandir’ under the name of his uncle Surendranath Ganguli. He received Kuntolin Puraskar in 1904 for the same. Local magazine Bharati published his novella, ‘Barodidi’, under his own name. He moved to Burma in the same year and functioned as a clerk in a government office in Rangoon.

Later, he secured a permanent job in Burma Railway, particularly in the Accounts Department. While in Burma, he revised the drafts of his work that he wrote in Bhagalpur and simultaneously created new fiction works. After living there for 13 years, he returned to Howrah in 1916.

He contributed his stories to the Jamuna magazine under three names- his own, Anila Devi (his sister), and Anupama. He occupied the position of the president of the Howrah district branch of the Indian National Congress between 1921 and 1936.

He was a staunch feminist and was against the core Hindu orthodoxy. He wrote against superstition and bigotry. He was a non-believer in standard social systems. The large prevalence of patriarchy did not stop Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay from writing about women and their suffering. His writings were quite authentic and revolutionary. The way he rejected social norms was clearly seen in his writings- ‘Devdas’, ‘Parineeta’, ‘Biraj Bau’ and ‘Palli Samaj’. Apart from all this, the ongoing freedom movement in the country also motivated his writings. ‘Pather Debi’, which he wrote in 1926, was a story that revolved around a revolutionary movement operated in Burma and the Far East. ‘Sesh Prashna’ was his last completed novel that was based on the problems involving love, marriage, individuals, and society.

Major works
Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay built strong female characters in his stories.

The novel ‘Swami’ was also a reflection of his feminism. The story describes an ambitious and bright girl named Saudamini who is doubtful about her emotions towards her husband, Ghanshyam and her lover, Narendra.

‘Devdas’, his most famous work, was not critically acclaimed. But, it was indeed his most remembered work. ‘Devdas’, published in 1917, was a love story. It was adapted more than seven times in numerous versions on the screen.

Bimal Roy’s adaptation film of Devdas

In 1914, Parineeta, a Bengali language novel of social protest, explored themes of caste and religion, which were prevalent at that time.

‘Iti Srikanta’ was a four-part novel that was published in 1916, 1918, 1927, and 1933 respectively. It is acclaimed as Sarat Chandra's 'masterpiece'. The narrator, Srikanta, is an aimless drifter in the novel. Through his dynamic characters, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay brought alive nineteenth-century Bengal. Society at that time was prejudice-ridden that needed to be radically changed.

‘Choritrohin’ which was published in 1917, was a tale of four women. They were wronged by society.

Around 50 films have been made on his works in several Indian languages. From Bengali and Hindi to Telugu, approximately 16 versions were made of the ‘Devdas’ novel alone. Even the movie ‘Parineeta’ was also made twice. The film Sabyasachi, released in 1977, was based on his work ‘Pather Dabi.’

Conclusion-
Being a popular novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote more than 30 novels, novellas, and stories. He used his personal tragedies as the basis of his novels and added more personal touch to his works. The themes he used in his novels were influenced by the writings of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. He passed away on January 16, 1938, in Kolkata from liver cancer. His works and life are still being showcased in ‘Sarat Mela’, an annual week-long fair that is held in late January every year in Howrah, West Bengal.

Subject:

Thakur ka Kuan: Of coterie and turn-coats in politics

Recitation of Shri Ompeakash Balmiki's iconoclastic verse from the floor of the Upper House of the Parliament has roiled politics in Bihar.

The verse was rendered by a senior member of the RJD was verbally assaulted by a father-son duo who are recognized as important leaders of a powerful caste faction.

The public spat throws a very harsh light on the metamorphosis of the social justice movement as it transformed itself into an electoral party.

Evidently, the verbal vitriol of the father-son duo stems from within the dynamics of upper caste politics in Bihar. Of the strategies that powerful castes have adopted to retain their socio-economic and political clout, when confronted with an ascendant social justice movement. Especially, in the aftermath of the Mandal Commission when the social justice movement acquired political power through electoral means.

Understandably, electoral politics has it's compulsions.   The need to secure a majority of popular votes and seats  opened the social justice based electoral parties to caste potentates. Hence, the significance of upper caste leaders and their feudal mentality even in a social justice based political party. A situation most aptly summed by Asrar ul Haq 'Majaz'
कुछ तुम्हारी निगाह काफ़िर थी
कुछ मुझे भी ख़राब होना था

This is the story of how feudal coteries acquired a hold within social justice based electoral parties. Equally interesting is the role of turn coats in sneaking into social justice movement.

Many of us were introduced to the social justice movement during the agitations around the Mandal Commission. It will a fair assessment to say that the controversy around the Mandal Commission was a movement of reckoning for liberal and left educated class, at least for those who were borne in upper caste families. Some of us stood by the Mandal Commission recommendations, while a majority of our liberal and left colleagues refused to betray their caste origins.

Many such intellectual, who protested the implementation of Mandal Commission are now at the helm of social justice based political parties..

The story of such turn-coats is very poignantly told by Uberto Solas. But to know what Solas has to say of these turn-coats you will have to see "A Successful Man".

When is Maha Saptami?
Maha Saptami is the seventh day of Durga Puja celebrations.

Traditions of Maha Saptami
Maha Saptami is also known as Saptami of Durgapuja and is one of the important days of Durga Puja.

The Maha Puja (Great Ceremony) starts on Maha Saptami.

Durga Puja is a Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates the worship of the goddess Durga.

Durga Puja celebrates the ten-armed mother goddess and her victory over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura.

The world was under threat from the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura, that no man or god could defeat. To vanquish the demon, Durga emerged from the collective energies of all the gods. Each of her ten arms brandished the deadliest weapon of each god.

On the seventh day (saptami) of Durga Puja, the goddess started her epic battle against Mahishasura which ended with his death on Vijaya Dashami (the 10th day).

21 October 1943: Netaji Subhash had formed the Azad Hind Government, India’s ‘declaration of independence’
Shashank Bharadwaj | 21 October,

On 21 October 2023, Netaji Subhash Bose had founded India's first independent government in exile
Formation of Azad Hind Government by Subash Chandra government/ Image Source: Deep Green Resistance News Service

Today, Oct the 80th anniversary of the formation of the first Indian government. In 1943, on October 21, one of India’s greatest sons – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose announced the formation of the ‘Arzi Hukumat-e-Azad Hind’ or the provincial government of free India in Singapore and declared war on the British Empire.

Subash Chandra Bose had launched a struggle to free India from British rule by forming the provisional government-in-exile during the latter part of the Second World War. Bose was convinced that it was armed struggle that would help the countrymen to achieve independence.

The leadership of Bose pulled Indians, who united with thousands of soldiers, along with former-prisoners and other expatriates who were living in Malayasia and Burma.

Under the provisional Government, Bose was the Head of State, Prime Minister and Minister of War. Captain Lakshmi headed the women’s organisation while SA Ayer headed the publicity wing in the newly-formed government. Revolutionary leader Ras Behari Bose was designated as the supreme adviser by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The government was supported by the Axis powers of Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, the Italian Social Republic, and their allies.

How was it set up?
The struggle for independence was carried on by Subhash Chandra Bose from abroad. The outbreak of the Second World War provided a good opportunity to Bose to strike a blow against the British imperialists. Bose, who was put on house arrest in 1940 managed to escape to Berlin on March 28, 1941.

The Indian community in German helped Bose to set up the Indian Independence League in 1942. The league took a decision to form the Indian National Army (INA) for the liberation of India.

On June 13, 1943, Bose arrived in Singapore on the invitation of Ras Bihari Bose. Netaji Bose was appointed as the head of the Indian Independence League and was also designated as the leader of the INA or ‘Azad Hind Fauj’. Bose gave his famous battle cry ‘Chalo Dilli’ and promised independence to Indians saying, “Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe Azadi dunga’ (You give me blood, I will give you freedom).

Significance of the Azad Hind government
Soon after the formation of the government, the Azad Hind government proclaimed authority over Indian civilian and military personnel in Southeast Asian British colonial territory and prospective authority over Indian territory to fall to the Japanese forces and the Indian National Army during the Second World War.

The provisional government not only enabled Bose to negotiate with the Japanese on an equal footing but also allowed him to the mobilise Indians living in East Asia to join and support the Indian National Army (INA). The Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army (INA) played an extremely important role during the national movement by providing a much-needed impetus to India’s struggle for Independence.

The Azad Hind government under Bose had in fact started its own bank, currency, civil code and stamps. Bose had even formed the first women regiment of the INA – Rani Jhansi Regiment, thus laying down the foundation for equal opportunity for women in armed forces.

Immediately after the formation of the government-in-exile, Azad Hind declared war against the Britishers and allied forces on the Indo-Burma Front. The Azad Hind Fauj also fought against the British Indian Army and the allied forces as part of the Imperial Japanese Army in the Imphal-Kohima sector.

The existence of the Azad Hind Government had given India’s independence struggle against the British a greater legitimacy. The brave actions of Subash Chandra Bose and his decision to set up the country’s first government had directly or indirectly triggered a chain of events that eventually forced the British government to leave India in August 1947.

The actions of INA, Azad Hind Govt had triggered events that resulted in India’s independence
The historical accounts especially noted down by the governors of the various provinces, the Intelligence Bureau, as mentioned in teb book Netaji: India’s Independence and British Archives, written by Kalyan Kumar De, points out that by the mid-1940s, the British had already gone into panic and were threatened because of the tremendous popularity of Subhas Chandra Bose and the nationwide appreciation.

As mentioned in the article by The New India Express, the sympathy for the INA that Subhash Chandra Bose had established to militarily oust the colonial power had created a havoc in the minds of the British, who understood that it was impossible for them to rule India anymore. The heroic actions of Bose and had triggered a naval mutiny in Bombay and several other stations, along with rebellions in some army camps, including Madras and Poona.

The subsequent actions of the British to court-martial officers and men of the INA led to nationwide anger over these trials. An IB report of November 1945 had warned the British government that there was enormous sympathy for the soldiers of the INA and mentioned that if the government did not take cognisance of this sentiment, the consequence would be a mass agitation and bloodshed.

The sentiments of Indians towards INA was such that several governors, out of the fear and anxiety had written letters to Viceroy Lord Wavell, warning him that the government would be playing with fire if it targeted the INA because they were seen as brave freedom fighters. They warned that this could result in a mutiny in the Indian Army.

The mutiny by Indian officers employed in the Royal Indian Navy in 1946 and the rebellion against the British in various cities convinced the British that they could no longer rely on the Indian armed forces to keep fighting their wars. The Indian soldiers working in the RIN were witness to the developments around the world and had supported the INA.

  • Azad Hind had diplomatic ties with Nazi Germany, the Italian Socialist Republic, the Empire of Japan, Thailand, Burma, Croatia, Manchukuo and the Second Philippine Republic.
  • In the Greater East Asia Conference held in November 1943, Azad Hind was an observer and was represented by Bose.
  • The Azad Hind government had its own court, civil code and currency. Its provisional capital was Port Blair, while its capital-in-exile was Rangoon and Singapore.
  • Subhash Chandra Bose was the Prime Minister. S. A. Ayer was the Minister of Broadcasting and Publicity and Lt. Col. A. C. Chatterji was the Minister of Finance.
  • There were a number of secretaries and advisors also.
  • The British were successful in defeating the INA and ousting the Japanese from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the northeast. After this and Subhash Chandra Bose’s death in 1945 in a plane crash, the Azad Hind ceased to exist.
  • Azad Hind was disestablished on 18 August 1945.

We already have Bhakts prancing around with their tails on fire, burning everything in their wake. So hopefully, Ravan should meet his end very soon.

Some truths, however bitter or inconvenient they might be, need to be told, on affidavit, if Courts are to remain repositories of the truth.
More unfortunately, this has to come from non-advocates even if advocates claim to be sworn to truth & justice.

Madhu Dandavate — two inches of foam that he gifted Indians and the letters he wrote
A physicist first and a politician later, Madhu Dandavate did not hold back from speaking truth to power. On his 96th birth anniversary, a look back at his legacy.

am quite conscious of the consequences of this letter. I can well imagine that through this communication, I am likely to incur your wrath and get my detention prolonged. However, I feel least worried about it. I will remain completely undeterred even if the prison yard from which I write this letter were to become my graveyard,” wrote Madhu Dandavate in a letter dated 14 January 1976 to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during Emergency.

A physicist first and a politician later, Madhu Dandavate did not hold back from speaking truth to power. The above excerpt is from a letter he wrote to Indira Gandhi when he along with Mrinal Gore, a fellow veteran socialist leader, was imprisoned. Upon hearing about the ‘inhuman conditions’ Gore was in and the “mental and physical torture” meted out to her, Dandavate called out Gandhi. Mentioning the robust International Women’s Day celebrations, it almost seemed as though the government’s treatment of Gore was an alternate reality.

He signed off with a declaration of his undying will to fight: “Rest assured that in this land of Mahatma Gandhi, my will to fight for freedom will ever remain more powerful than the engine of repression that seeks to suppress it.”

Dear Rohit Bhai,
It's a shame that so many of the Socialist leaders from many parts of India could not find someone a bit more sensible than Mr. Jitan Ram Manjhi.
Please watch the following recent video of Mr. Manjhi:

Jitan Ram Manjhi Exclusive: जीतन राम मांझी ने NDA गठबंधन को लेकर ये क्या कहा ? | BJP | PM Modi News

Maybe none of the organizing committee members had seen this video or similar ones. But his mere presence in the NDA alliance should have given the organizers some inkling of Mr. Manjhi's state of mind and should have researched a bit more about thinking of Mr. Manjhi. Or, is it possible that the organizers too happen to be supporters of Modi?? That should put all of them in double shame.

I would appreciate it very much if you would be kind enough to acquaint us with the speech of Mr. Manjhi as the Chief Guest of the meeting. I hope his speech was recorded.

Thank you,
-S

My question is regarding the organizers of this function.
What were the criteria for choosing the chief guest?
The fact that Mr. Manjhi is part of the NDA is well known.
The question arises right there. Should a person who is part of NDA be considered for the honor of being the chief guest? It shows the mentality of the organizers. Is it possible that they call themselves "socialist", but deep down in their heart their thinking is no different from RSS's Manuwadi?e
I hope someone will be able to answer my question.
-Satinath
