Judge of conscience: Justice Muralidhar’s journey from India to world, Afroz Alam Sahil, Dec 16 2025
When the United Nations announced that Justice S. Muralidhar would lead its independent inquiry into human rights violations in Palestine, it was more than an international appointment. It felt like the world had paused to acknowledge a jurist who built his reputation not on power or position, but on conscience .. Muralidhar should have been in the Supreme Court, but the world has now given him a bench larger than any he was offered in India .. Veteran journalist Qurban Ali, who has observed him closely for years, described his work with admiration: “Unfortunately, he was not allowed to reach the Supreme Court of India, but his value is now being recognized globally.” To him, Muralidhar’s role in the Palestine inquiry will test not just diplomatic patience but moral courage. “There will be political pressure, but his impartiality gives us hope. The world needs investigators who cannot be bent.” .. For India, this is a moment of global reflection. While New Delhi deepens its relationship with israel, one of its most respected jurists now leads a global inquiry into human rights violations by that very state. The duality is real, and the message is larger: India’s constitutional conscience still has global resonance .. The inquiry he leads will be contested, criticized and politicized. Yet somewhere in the chaos, there lies the possibility of truth. He has carried integrity from Madras to Delhi, from Hashimpura to Odisha, and now from India to the world’s most fraught front line. If justice has a flicker left in global public life, it will reflect in his work. And if his past is any guide, he will not look away. The world will be watching. More importantly, the vulnerable will be waiting.
The UN General Assembly on Monday overwhelmingly adopted a draft resolution reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, including the right to an independent State of Palestine. The draft resolution was approved by a strong majority of 164 member states, with eight countries voting against it, israel, the US, Micronesia, Argentina, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and Nauru. Nine countries abstained: Ecuador, Togo, Tonga, Panama, Fiji, Cameroon, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, and South Sudan
Palestinian journalist recounts rape and torture in Israeli prison, 16 Dec 2025
'At that moment, I wanted to die'
Palestinian journalist Sami al-Saai has described being tortured and raped while detained in israel’s Megiddo prison. Al-Saai was detained by Israeli forces on 23 February 2024. He also described the torture and sexual abuse endured by other prisoners at the hands of israeli soldiers and prison guards, particularly detainees from Gaza. At least 9,300 Palestinians are currently reported to be held in israeli prisons, though the actual figure is believed to be higher, as israel withholds information on hundreds of people seized in Gaza. While abuses in Israeli detention have long been documented, reports of torture and prisoner deaths have surged since October 2023.
Rainstorms batter Gaza’s tent camps Ahmad Sbaih, The Electronic Intifada, 16 December 2025
“The ceasefire changed nothing for us. We still live in tents, with sadness and exhaustion as big as a mountain in our hearts. What should have been a season of cold evenings and warm tea has turned into a season of running, lifting soaked blankets and holding shaking children against the wind,” Alaf said, with his voice breaking. The family’s provisions of flour dissolved into paste while the smell of sewage choked the air. As the children slept on the wet ground, with their clothes clinging to their skin, Alaf’s four-month-old daughter grew cold and weak, her breathing shallow. “I carried her through the night, hoping someone, somewhere, could help .. We haven’t received any shelter or food aid since the ceasefire. We wait for winter with tight chests, knowing the sky will open not with mercy but with ruin. Rain has become more frightening than the sound of bombs for us” .. Harara is a mother of six, but her eldest son, Ahmad, went missing in April when he refused to leave their home in Shujaiya. After the October ceasefire, Harara found out that Ahmad had been detained by the israeli army back in April. “Every day, I pray for him to come home safe. I thought the ceasefire would offer us some comfort to at least check our neighborhood, to know if our home was still standing. Even if it didn’t, I wanted to put my tent near what was left of it.” .. “Nothing has changed from the ceasefire. Every night we still hear bombing and bullets,” al-Sabi said, describing how israel is continuing its genocide unabated in the Gaza Strip. Al-Sabi’s family, desperately in need of financial assistance, has received only one food parcel since the October ceasefire began. “If it wasn’t for the soup kitchen, my family would starve”.
