Dear friends
A demand was recently voiced on these pages for dropping the name Sanjay Gandhi from some park(s) in Maharashtra.
Although I would have preferred this to be made as an independent statement in the name of the Socialist Party (India) rather than as a letter to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the demand itself deserves our support.
The convergence between the RSS and Sanjay Gandhi during the emergency is well documented.[ See below].
The demand should be accompanied with the suggestion on behalf of Socialists that the park named after Sanjay should be renamed after Madhu Limaye who did much to expose the RSS.[ A mere demand to drop Sanjay's name, without such an accompanying demand is insufficient especially when the suggestion emanates from the Socialist Party.]
Also, there is a need to formulate a national approach on such questions and not treat it as a matter for Maharashtra alone. Sometime back I found on a visit to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, that the RSS had put up a commemorative structure on its own behalf at the National Memorial to the Rani of Jhansi.
A link to an important documentation on the RSS role during the emergency is pasted below.
Best wishes
Anil Nauriya
