[The article above draws our attention to a forgotten page of history.
Useful only to that extent.]

A black page of history blotted out in our memory.

The decisive defeat of the Nazis in the very heart of Soviet Russia is even today remembered with so much pomp and grandeur.

What's hardly ever mentioned is that Hitler inaugurated WWII, on September 1 1939, just over a week after securing Stalin virtually as a junior accomplice via the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact sealed on August 23. By invading Poland.
The Soviet Union would launch its own invasion of Poland, from the opposite end, promptly thereafter on September 17 piggybacking a provision of a secret protocol of the Pact.
At the end of September 1939 the division of Poland was confirmed by the German–Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Demarcation.
