Subject: Rahul Gandhi: Reconciler or hellraiser?

Please see attached as a PDF file my Times of India column:

“Rahul Gandhi, who a few days back kept waving the pocket-edition of the constitution at everybody he came across, suddenly in parliament, on Monday, started showing religious figures and religious symbols. It was an immaculate contradiction. He had become a schoolteacher with flash cards, trying to prove he knew enough about religion. He also tried to acquire a moralistic perch through this exercise. Whatever his reason for doing so may be, religion is a landmine that a politician should avoid stepping on. He should have remained inside the frame of the constitution he had nicely created as his niche. Sadly, he had disrupted the harmony of his own efforts.”

Dear Dr. Pandey:

That’s my concern too. A true leader would assert on rationality. In past Rahul has been showing off as  shaivite Brahmin going to temples and showing off tripund tilak and the sacred thread(janeu). Others like Akhilesh also keeps flaunting his Aastha. They don’t fit in the unsaid part of Nehru’s scientific temper. Maybe they find it politically more acceptable gesture. But that in itself is unethical opportunism.
