In most other industries, revenues taken from vendors under the guise
of “consulting” whereby the paying vendor is then 'independently'
evalated would seem subject to antitrust or inspector general
inquiries. For some reason the IT analyst market is different. Gartner
goes to a lengthy effort to suggest indepedence, irrespective of the
large fees it receives from the same vendors it evaluates.
Nonetheless, the argument rings hollow for the obvious common sense
and conflict of interest reasons. Gartner employs many smart people,
however, their independence is questionable at best and the majority
of their comments and evaluations are now publicly available among
online peer groups, social networks and micro-focused forums. Gartner
fills a purpose, however, that purpose is lessening with the rise of
social media and legitimate alternatives.
