Changing Layout/Views

Hi,

I am reading up on how to change the views of social stream. I am currently using the getting started project located at: https://github.com/ging/social_stream-started. In the examples provided I understand how the footer can be 'defaced.' However I don't see how I can modify the background or main theme. Would I have to overwrite the view?
