Ruth Kihm and Sonia Xinico-Ciavarella are the newest GOD'S CHILD
Project North Central board members.
Kihm, a licensed certified social worker in North Dakota has joined The
GOD'S CHILD Project North Central board of directors. Her
professional experience includes the areas of rural and global social
policy, human services administration and delivery, program development
and international service learning. After 13 years of direct practice,
mostly in rural North Dakota, she began her teaching career in the
Social Work program at Minot State University in 2001. Her areas of
expertise include social welfare policy, and community and
organizational practice.
Kihm has been involved with The GOD'S CHILD Project for the last two
years. She has led two ServiceTeams to Guatemala. In spring of 2004,
she developed an international service learning class at Minot State
University and brought college students to work with GOD'S
CHILD-supported charities in Guatemala to gain hands-on cultural
experience.
Kihm and her husband, Allen, have lived in Minot, North Dakota, since
1983. They have two grown children, Sarah and Joshua, and three
grandsons.
Xinico-Ciavarella was born in Patzun, Chimaltenango, Guatemala, in
1973. During the Guatemalan civil war in the early 1980's, she
became an orphan and was pulled from the war zone and raised by
Bismarck, North Dakota-native Patrick Atkinson. Thanks to Atkinson,
the founder and international executive director of The GOD'S CHILD
Project, which cares for and educates over 2,500 orphans,
Xinico-Ciavarella was given the chance for a better future.
In 1995, she began working for The GOD'S CHILD Project-supported
Guatemalan program Asociación Nuestros Ahijados and became the
program's director of legal advocacy in Guatemala until September
2001. In November 2001, she came to the United States to start a family
and looks forward to continuing her education in law.
She considers it an honor to be a part of The GOD'S CHILD Project
North Central board of directors.
