the big fish. I'm wondering if anyone would like to share their
experiences with lesser known tools or sites regarding social
networking that translate to the small business owner.

For example:

I just discovered SWOM - The Society for Word of Mouth.

Not to be confused by the very corporate WOMMA - Word of Mouth
Marketing Association.

SWOM uses a very clean Ning platform to host an online community of
over 3,600 Internet Marketing Experts and newbie's from all over the
world.

So if you do Email marketing in Boston and would like to collaborate,
say, with a Search Engine Optimization Pro Australia, it's nearly as
easy as saying hello to your buddy on Facebook.

Update... Google indexed my user profile on SWOM in about 24 hours!! I
haven't done an SEO campaign on my name "Dan Brunelle" but I do
monitor how the results occur organically.
