Background on DemocracyNYC:
DemocracyNYC is the City of New York’s nonpartisan initiative to increase voter registration, participation and civic engagement across the five boroughs. DemocracyNYC was first announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio in January 2018 during the State of the City address, detailing a robust 10-Point Plan to make New York City the fairest, most civically engaged big city in America. Also in 2018, Phillip Thompson was appointed the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives and charged with overseeing DemocracyNYC. Since then, the administration has hired a Chief Democracy Officer to lead DemocracyNYC and partner with agencies through New York City to ensure that every person has the voice and the power to strengthen our democracy.
Job Responsibilities:
The Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU) is seeking qualified individuals to serve as Outreach Leads for DemocracyNYC. These individuals will report to the DemocracyNYC Field Director and work in close partnership with DemocracyNYC Senior Leadership, PEU, agency partners, and other internal and external stakeholders to support the cohesive implementation of DemocracyNYC.
The job responsibilities for the Outreach Lead include, but are not limited to:
· Executing the field plan for nonpartisan voter registration, the City’s nonpartisan Get Out the Vote(GOTV) effort, and other key DemocracyNYC initiatives
· Tracking, qualitatively and quantitatively, DemocracyNYC’s progress toward voter registration and GOTV goals;
· Conducting targeted outreach to DemocracyNYC’s focus populations including Immigrants, People with Disabilities, Youth, Justice-Involved people, and historically underrepresented communities, in direct coordination with DemocracyNYC strategy team;
· Supporting the planning and execution of major events/priorities including National Voter Registration Day, agency voter registration, etc.;
· Engaging New Yorkers through various outreach approaches including door-to-door canvassing;
· Liaising with community partners and key stakeholders to increase participation in DemocracyNYC projects;
· Recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers for the program.
Preferred Qualifications and/or Skills:
· 1+ year of experience with community, issue, labor, or political organizing, ideally in New York City;
· Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to engage people in conversation;
· Experience working with community stakeholders such as nonprofit partnerships;
· Commitment to using data to inform continuous improvement and decision-making;
· Flexibility and creativity in one’s approach to making plans and leveraging resources;
· Results-driven and self-motivated;
· Ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment;
· Bilingual proficiency is a plus;
· Excellent communication, research, and analytics skills.
