About Liberation Ventures

Liberation Ventures (LV) is building a multiracial democracy that works for all of us — by making racial repair a reality in the United States. LV mobilizes resources, narratives, and relationships to realize the promise of reparations for Black Americans. Founded in April 2020, LV is led by Aria Florant. Concept materials can be found here.

Position Summary

We are looking for a Development Consultant to work with Aria Florant, the Co-Founder & Managing Director, to build and execute a sustainable fundraising strategy at Liberation Ventures. Over the next five years, this person will contribute to raising over $25M for the chronically underfunded reparations field — and accelerate momentum toward a comprehensive federal reparations program.

The Consultant will work with Aria to build the development department at Liberation Ventures. This person will support day to day fundraising efforts by managing LV’s current pipeline from A-Z: sourcing and qualifying new donors, driving cultivation efforts, and supporting Aria to maintain consistent engagement with current donors. In addition, this person will be a thought partner to Aria on long-term fundraising strategy. To a lesser extent, this person will help draft and/or edit grant proposals.

We are looking for a detail-oriented, highly strategic thinker with 5+ years of development experience. While this position is currently a part-time contract or retainer position, we expect to transition the role into full time in 2024, and we are especially excited about candidates who would be open to that transition. We are looking for someone who wants to grow with us, who will partner with Aria to raise larger and larger funds in the future.

This individual will:

  • Source and qualify new individual and institutional donors through online research and other means, and be responsible for maintaining the donor prospect list, prioritizing the list, and developing methods for connecting with each donor.

  • Drive a regular cadence of donor cultivation and engagement efforts through planning events, crafting emails/communication, etc.

  • Provide thought partnership to Aria and select members of LV’s Advisory Committee on preparation for individual asks as well as long-term fundraising strategy.

  • Draft and/or edit grant proposals when necessary (we expect this to be a small proportion of this person’s time).

Experience and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience at a development consultancy or a development role at a medium or large nonprofit (ideally $5M+ budget).

  • Extreme attention to detail; thorough and thoughtful when conducting research and developing deliverables.

  • Creative and savvy thinker, and able to develop fundraising strategies that subvert and disrupt traditional power dynamics between funders and grantees

  • Exceptional project management skills; highly organized and able to manage many moving pieces in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

  • Outstanding relationship builder, with people of all backgrounds and professional experiences; able to see and manage power and privilege dynamics in a group and create working environments where all people are equally valued, feel cared for, and contribute.

  • A vision and drive to imagine and realize a culture of repair in the US.

  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Work Environment

Position is 100% remote.

Position Type

Position is a part-time (10-20 hours/week) contract position.

Compensation

Liberation Ventures offers competitive compensation based on experience, skills, and a proven track record. For this position, we are open to both individuals and firms, as well as multiple types of arrangements (e.g., retainer fee, hourly rate, etc.)
