Position: Director of Partnerships & Business Development – Prosperity Candle L3C 

Location: Florence, MA 

 

Prosperity Candle – A Unique Social Enterprise in the Pioneer Valley 

Prosperity Candle invests in women to help build peace and prosperity in the world. We work 
with women from regions of conflict and natural disaster by supporting them as entrepreneurs 
overseas, and providing employment to refugees living in West Springfield. We go to places like 
Haiti, Rwanda and Iraq to seed candle businesses with access to local and global markets, and 
purchase items made by artisan groups around the world. Locally, we employ women recently 
resettled from places like Burma who are rebuilding their lives after fleeing persecution. 

 

Our shared prosperity model for sustainable impact complements the work of nonprofit partners to 
help fill the gap between vital vocational and life skills programs and a viable means to support a 
family. We create opportunities for women seeking to earn above a living wage. Our work is 
sustained through the design, production and sale of distinctive handmade candles and gifts to 
nonprofits, businesses, faith-based organizations, and individual customers who desire meaningful 
products aligned with their values and have a direct, positive impact on a woman’s life. 

 

Prosperity Candle is a unique type of organization. With both a nonprofit and for-profit arm, we 
use the best tools available to us to achieve our mission of empowering women to earn above a 
living wage. In our 3rd year, Prosperity Candle’s team and main operations are based in Florence, 
MA adjacent to Northampton. 

 

As a young social enterprise, Prosperity Candle has gained a tremendous traction with partners 
and customers like Amnesty International, Oxfam America, FEED Projects, Women in the World 
Foundation, Yankee Candle, Whole Foods, Kiva, United Methodist Church, World Pulse, Partners 
In Health, PAX World Fund, and eBay corporate. 

 

Prosperity Candle Director of Partnerships & Business Development 

Now that Prosperity Candle has made significant inroads with a number of key partners, we need a 
talented and ambitious Director of Partnerships & Business Development to take our work to the 
next level and scale up impact. Prosperity Candle’s ability to empower thousands of women 
around the world to earn above a living wage relies directly on selling candles. Our most effective 
strategy to date to increase sales has been by identifying like-minded partners to spread the word 
about our work and purchase custom candles. 

 

We are seeking a Director of Partnerships & Business Development to lead this effort and build on 
our strong foundations. The key areas of partnership and sales outreach include: 

. Mission-aligned nonprofit organizations 
. Faith-based organizations 
. Companies and organizations seeking event and/or corporate gifts 
. Retail companies seeking mission-aligned private label candles 


 

We need a unique person to fill this role. The Director of Partnerships & Business Development will 
grow and manage a team, and guide the partnership and sales strategy for the company. We are 
looking for someone who is deeply inspired by our mission and who can speak to it in an authentic 
way, and is excited to initiate new partnership and sales relationships. 

 

In the short-term, the Director of Partnerships & Business Development will manage and 
implement many aspects of Prosperity Candle’s partnership development, marketing, branding, 
business development and sales. Over time, however, this position will become more of a 
leadership role, managing the vision and implementation of a team of staff. 

 

Responsibilities: 

Leadership & Management 

. Represent Prosperity Candle at key events 
. Build and manage a partnership, marketing and sales team (including many part-time 
volunteers and interns) 
. Develop and implement strategic plan for growing Prosperity Candle’s brand, 
partnerships, and customer acquisition and retention 
. Work closely with Prosperity Candle President & Advisory Board 


 

Partnership Development 

. Manage existing partnerships with nonprofit organizations and faith-based 
organizations 
. Foster new partnerships with like-minded nonprofit organizations and faith-based 
groups 
. Cultivate shared goals with partners and generate MOUs with detailed action plans for 
cross-promotion, shared programmatic activities, custom candle procurement, and 
media coverage 


 

Marketing & Branding 

. Manage Prosperity Candle’s brand identity 
. Oversee all marketing and communications efforts to raise awareness about Prosperity 
Candle’s gifts that give back – these efforts include public relations, email marketing, 
social media marketing, website SEO, blogging, and possible paid advertising 
. Serve as the primary media relations contact and give interviews on the company

Business Development & Sales 

. Manage the sales strategy & growth of the following channels: 
o Online retail at www.prosperitycandle.com 
o Corporate/event custom gift 
o Faith-based sales 
o Wholesale 


. Analyze trends in sales and create plans for continuous improvement 
. Create a system for identifying new sales prospects, pitching to prospects, closing the 
sales deal, & seeking referrals 


 

Desired Skills & Experience: 

. 5-7 years of experience in partnership development, marketing, business development, 
communications and/or sales 
. Exceptional communications skills, ability to attract, inspire and retain a team and cultivate 
new business relationships to drive sales 
. Strong commitment to working with women and developing women’s entrepreneurship and 
business skills 
. Detail oriented with strong organizational skills 
. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills 
. Ability to work independently and juggle multiple tasks simultaneously – this position will be 
fun, challenging and dynamic! 
. Available for some domestic travel as needed 


 

Salary and benefits will be competitive in the long-run. In the short-term, compensation will be 
tied primarily to sales success and equity due to the limited resources of the team. Flexible working 
conditions are available.
