About the role
The Smarter Cities Challenge (smartercitieschallenge.org) is a signature IBM philanthropic initiative that contributes the skills and expertise of teams of top-talent IBMers to address key challenges facing cities around the world. Over the past 6 years, the program has worked with 130 cities in over 30 countries, with contributions to date valued at over $60 million.
Winning cities have used the recommendations prepared by Smarter Cities Challenge teams to make substantive progress on a diverse array of urban issues. The program’s impact has been recognized by the US Federal Government with the 2014 Secretary's Award for Public-Private Partnerships, jointly awarded by HUD, USDA, and the Council on Foundations, and was featured in New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristoff's "A Path Appears" as an example of highly effective service-based giving. It has also been recognized by the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation (2015 Best Corporate Steward Award) and The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (2013 Chairman's Award).
Smarter Cities Challenge program managers work as a team to implement the global program, including selection and preparation of city partners, project scoping, identification and training of IBM participants, coaching participants on public policy and process, measurement of program impact, and communicating lessons learned to internal and external stakeholders.
To be successful, the program manager is expected to understand the core urban policy challenges and processes, political landscape facing city leaders, relevant technical capabilities and resources at IBM, and leadership development opportunities for IBM participants.
Excellent project management and collaboration skills are essential to execute complex programmatic elements and manage a portfolio of grants to cities in a fast-paced environment. Program managers work closely with a global team of corporate citizenship professionals and top-talent IBM participants selected for the Smarter Cites Challenge. A background working with cross-cultural and international teams is highly valued.
