Dear SDTIC Members -

Our discussion this past Monday on the impact of the Trump administration on our colleagues touched on the changes to federally funded grants.  I learned recently that a colleague from UCLA, Laura Wray-Lake, received a message regarding her federally funded grants that restricted terms she could use to describe her research.  Laura conducts research on youth civic development.  These are Laura's words:

"The terms/topics I am prohibited from using are gender nonbinary (this arose in our grant when we described the sample..!) and racial justice (pretty central to the study of youth civic engagement these days!). The grant is funded by AmeriCorps, which mostly funds services and programs across the country (and a small amount of research), so a lot of community programming is also affected by this. They specifically named four executive orders that they were using to identify non-compliant grants. "

I think we need to consider follow-up actions as a community to encourage our professional organizations to push back on these intrusions into our work.

Best regards,

Larry

Hi all,

I'm sorry to have missed the conversation monday and the opportunity to be in community with you all.  Challenging times for certain.  This type of censoring of grant language is happening to a lot of people and also some investigators funding has been completely stopped including one in my college that is focused on preparing Special Education teachers. Letter received and funding stopped in the same day. Our College and our Office of General Council have started a lawsuit.  Many professional organizations are already pushing back and filing lawsuits including the AAUP, ACE, APA (I think) and FABB Federation of Associations of Brain and Behavior Sciences

In addition to what you all discussed on Monday, another quick thing that you can do is join the AAUP (either national or your local chapter). Also, organizations like the ACLU, trans law center are also filing suits so supporting those will be important as well!

Stay strong folks.
In gratitude and solidarity,
stace

Hi all,

Hope you’re hanging in.

I just learned of a timely, free 1-hr training that will start in about 5 minutes (if you can’t make it, you can register to receive a recording) entitled  “Courage, not compliance: how you can organize resistance in your community”

It’s partially organized by SURJ.

More info here.

In community,
