Dear colleagues,
We are happy to share the below invitation to participate to the Digital Democracy Summit in The Hague, October 9th-10th 2025. As part of this event,  the European Digital Democracy network (EDDY) chairs an academic track that features sessions on European research projects, as well as individual talks on contemporary research in digital democracy.
There is a (limited) amount of funding available to reimburse travel or accommodation expenses of participants who are in need of such support – in particular, early career researchers, researchers that are currently unemployed or have very limited funding, etc. If you are interested in applying for this funding, please get in touch with Frederik Van De Putte (vande...@esphil.eur.nl) by July 18th, 2025 latest, explaining your current position and why you think you qualify for financial support. Once all applications are in, we will serve those that qualify to the degree that is possible given the available funding, and write back to you to inform you of this.
All the best,
Frederik Van De Putte, Erasmus University Rotterdam and Ghent University

Digital Democracy
Accessible, open and independent digital participation is becoming increasingly important. The Digital Democracy Summit provides a platform to increase knowledge, build bridges and make connections. During the conference, we strengthen cooperation between government, science, business and society. We explore how digital democracy can contribute to inclusive and meaningful participation of government and residents.
Digital tools to support healthy democracy
The urgency of the issue cannot be underestimated. Digital participation offers an opportunity to increase the legitimacy of government decisions and improve governance involvement. By using the knowledge that exists within society, we improve the quality and accuracy of policy choices. By involving different parties at an early stage, conflicts can be avoided. Digital resources support structures and processes that enable a culture of participation and contribute to a healthy democracy.
Room to explore and go in depth
The conference will offer keynotes, presentations, panels, workshops and case discussions on the role of digital platforms in democratic processes. In addition to examples from government practice, scholarly insights will be shared. There is plenty of room to learn about digital participation tools and go in depth on topics such as the impact of AI on digital participation and the relationship between online and offline processes.
