We are excited to announce our upcoming workshop on Online Deliberation and Mass Participation.
Workshop Details
🗓 Date: Thursday,
March 27, 2025
📍 Location: Erasmus
University Rotterdam, The Netherlands
🏛 Room: Sanders
1-12
⏰ Time: 10:30 – 16:30
Topic of the Workshop
A central challenge in deliberative democracy lies in balancing deliberation, which works best in small groups, and mass participation, which is essential for democratic legitimacy. According to deliberative democratic theory, decisions should emerge from inclusive discussions among all those affected. But how can this be achieved on a large scale? Can online deliberation bridge this gap? And if so, how should it be designed? This workshop aims to address these questions from philosophical, computational, and practical perspectives, exploring both the potential and challenges of online deliberation in democratic processes. The event is part of the NWO Vidi ENCODE project (Explicating the Norms of Collective Deliberation), led by Frederik Van De Putte and hosted at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
