Hey social chairs!  Hope everyone is having a great summer.  I am emailing you about something that is not necessarily social in nature, although part of the volunteering is that we do drink a lot together.  I was hoping you could still pass this along to your clusters.  This is a great organization, and I think any CBS student would really get a lot out of it.

Thanks a lot,

Andy

Fellow Deez,

I am writing to you tonight about a cause that is near and dear to my heart (and I think one that I have already written to you about for various requests, and probably used the same cliché… sorry).  Minds Matter is a non-profit that helps underprivileged, high achieving high school students prepare for and get into college.  Starting with Sophomores, we work with the kids on their writing skills, test prep, goal setting and learning about and eventually applying to college.  We also help them apply for and pay for academic summer programs after their sophomore and junior years.  Each student is pair with two mentors (plus additional writing advisors and test prep instructors) who help guide them on a week to week basis.  Being a mentor is not a light commitment, as we have a little more than 20 sessions each year with the kids, on Saturdays between 12:30 and 2:30 pm, and the expectation is that mentors will be there for 75% of those sessions.  But with that commitment comes a relationship that you will build with one great student who needs the support and knowledge of college grads like yourselves, and I can tell you from personal experience that this is the most engaged and impactful I have ever felt volunteering.  Aside from that though, it is just a lot of fun, and the community of volunteers is both a lot of fun and really impressive.  I’ve had many instances where my Minds Matter network has come in handy for work, and I know none of you need more friends after 1 year of business school, but someday, you just might.

I’ve been doing this for a number of years, and now I’m the director of the sophomore program.  We are looking for 112 new mentors to become role models for the kids we have selected for the program, and I think all of you would add a lot of value in that role, even for only 1 year.  If you think you might be interested, please feel free to email me with any questions or to talk about it.  If you decide to go through with it, you will need to fill out a quick online application here: http://mindsmatter.kintera.org/NYCvolunteer

We get started in 2 months, so if you think this is something you might want to do, get to it!

Thanks,

Andy Jacobi
