Hi all,

I'm still recovering from the cold that hit me this week. I guess my
body was more worn out than I had thought.

I wanted to do more work on this homepage screenshot before sharing it.
Between prep for next week and getting rest, I haven't found the time to
do more. So, without further ado, attached is screenshot representing
the general direction where the homepage is headed.

Britt has seen this and made a number of great suggestions:

- Remove the logos from the second box
- Transform the second and third boxes on the left into simple buttons
- Include links for people to join the community / subscribe to our feeds
- Change "Clients" to Hire-Us, "Partners" to Partner, and "Developers"
to Develop
- Use the box on the right to feature the services that earn Social
Actions revenue

With all of the amazing feedback that Britt has recruited from her
nonprofit marketing friends (see links below), I know the homepage will
change significantly in the coming days.

"Taking Social Actions"
By Nedra Weinreich
http://www.social-marketing.com/blog/2008/10/taking-social-actions.html

"Shouldn't It Be Easier to Act via Social Acitons?"
By Nancy Schwartz
http://www.gettingattention.org/my_weblog/2008/10/shouldnt-it-be.html

Our plan is to launch the new website and copy in the first week of
November, with a clickable preview version ready on October 21st.

Please take this opportunity to launch in with criticism and suggestions
for the attached screenshot. My plan is to do up new screenshots over
the weekend (based on your feedback). But no rush. If you don't have a
chance to reply to this round, you can always reply to the next round.

Thanks for your help.

All the best,
Peter

Peter,
This design is much much better. It offers much more clear focus on a single "call to action" (the search button).

By the way, I was really pleased to see Britt's latest blog posting on our Social Actions Alerts being applied to Darfur.
http://www.netsquared.org/blog/britt-bravo/can-you-build-flash-widget-reading-relief-darfur

Britt, I was actually using Darfur as my example keyword in my demonstration with Peter of Social Actions Alerts as what I believe to be one of the most essential social actions I could take. Thanks for the press! We hope more people will use Social Actions Alerts like you do for the sake of Darfur!

thanks,

Peter...starting to look very good!

some design things from my side:

- the "find an action"- box looks great: clean and clear
- the "create an action" and "add actions.." should be as clear! that would mean: no underlined lines! no bold lettertype, no other colours! and yes i definitely agree with britt: no logos

- the dark blue menu is competing with the bold "doing good has..."
- "doing good has..." should be lining up with the menu
-btw...why is that menu there anyways? get rid of it! (too be honest...only after looking at this image for long i see what the text is saying and that i have found those possibilities already at the actual site
- advice on the right: no more text! put some pictures in there, make it personal! maybe nice idea to have a whole grid of pictures of actual real life projects, fading in and out ...with the possibility for people to click on and connect to

otherwise...rock on!
britt is great
the marketing women rock too!
peter...i am soo proud!

btw...everybody here...it is so so so amazing to follow this, to feel this energy and bright minds inspiring each other!

Cheers, Fre

Hi Fre,

Thanks for all this feedback and advice.

I'll see what I can do about pictures on the right side of the
homepage. I like the idea, but am a little worried it might distract
from the search box. We'll see.

Thanks also for your encouraging words. It sure is a thrill working on
this initiative. October is going to be the nuttiest month yet.

All the best,
peter

Hi Israel,

I saw Britt's post about the Darfur cell alert as well. I've been
meaning to post a comment on it. Great stuff.

Hi all,

Yesterday, I did some work in the plane and between connections.

Attached is a revised screen-shot of what the homepage could look like.
I tried to pull in specific suggestions from Fre, Britt, and the four
nonprofit marketing mavens (thanks again Britt for pulling together
those expert critiques).

I realize my design skills are leaving us with something to be desired.
I'm going to suggest to a bunch of design friends here in the Bay Area
that we meet up one evening this week and build from the screenshot
attached.

If that happens, we could have something very nice looking for the
homepage, and an excellent template for the inside pages by the end of
the week.

All the best,
Peter

awesome, peter!

sorry, coming in late on this as we still don't have internet here and
even the places who advertise wifi don't have it! (that includes
starbucks, how i am functioning is beyond me!)

just looked at the latest attachment and had a couple quick thoughts
to throw in:

- in the blue quote area, the quoted text should be larger than the
attribution (not enormous difference, but some)
- i'd like to see two box titles, like in solid blue that either stand
up from or drop down into the two link boxes, one that says topics or
categories or whatever and the other that says questions.
- i'd like to see an orange arrow or similar graphic that connects the
'enter your cause' box with the 'do something good' box
- i'd like a punctuation mark (period, exclamation point, something)
at the end of the catch phrase under the search, but that could just
be me
- i'd like a bit more orange integrated with the site so it doesn't
look strange that it is only in the logo, pale orange instead of gray
for the boxes, maybe the links in the footer can be inside an orange
box, kind of like the search button.

those are all things for your head-to-head with the designers though.
awesome job on streamlining! looks great!~
