Hi all,

Passing along an announcement for a great mashup contest just launched

Hacking Education: A Contest for Developers and Data Crunchers
<http://www.donorschoose.org/hacking-education>

A public invitation to make discoveries and build apps that improve
education in America.

Arianna Huffington, Teach for America’s Wendy Kopp, former NYC schools
chancellor Joel Klein, and venture capitalist Fred Wilson will judge
the entries – and Stephen Colbert will present the grand prize to the
winner!

At DonorsChoose.org over the last 10 years, more than 165,000 teachers
at 43,000 public schools have posted over 300,000 classroom project
requests, inspiring $80,000,000 in giving from 400,000 donors who
performed over a million search queries and made more than a million
donations. For the first time, DonorsChoose.org is sharing its
extensive data, along with an API.

Contestants will develop apps or conduct analyses to be evaluated
against a central question: Which app or analysis has the greatest
potential to engage the public and impact education?

Participants can submit contest entries in the categories of PHP,
JavaScript, Ruby, Python, .NET, and data analyses to be judged by
respected experts from those communities. Additional category judges
include Anil Dash, Jane Viau, Tom Hughes Croucher, Thomas Fuchs, Scott
Guthrie, Scott Hanselman, Gina Trapani, Adrian Holovaty, Hilary Mason,
Chad Fowler, Jeff Casimir, and Gil Elbaz.
