I've been using the Engenius eub-362 ext 200mW (23dBm) with a decent
external antenna, pretty short LMR-400 coax, and 30' or so of active
USB cables for a few years. My primary antenna is a 8 dBi omni,
sometimes using a HG2415U-PRO 15dBi omni and sometimes playing around
with one of Frank's 16 dBi yagi. I've been trying to find a more
powerful USB client, so stumbled into:

http://www.shireeninc.com/products/octopus/2-watt-usb/

Has anyone heard of this device? The tech specs sound real good, but
I'm concerned about the power draw. I've found out USB specs show a
max of 500 mA @ 5 volts. This device claims to output 2 watts. I've
asked Shireen if a standard laptop USB port can provide the proper
power. They have danced around the question, not answering it to my
satisfaction.

Do the experts in this group think enough power is available from a
laptop? Btw, this guy is a bit pricey, around $290 for the basic model
with the rubber ducky.

Thanks,

Looking this over, it is not for US use. That is because it does not conform to Part 15 and the power output is high enough that you would have to use your Ham License (assumption) to utilize it. If you do, however, you will have to conform to Part 97 and not use encryption and face the issues of pecuniary interest as well. Probably better to put your energies into antenna gain solutions and stay with the Part 15 requirements as for each 3 dB there will be a 1 dB loss.
