Presentation:
Mike Outmesguine (
http://www.wifi-toys.com) will discuss and show some of
the wireless relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers representing
themselves and grassroots organizations like Part-15.org, SoCalFreeNet.org,
wireless ISPs and others are working under guidance from the FCC and FEMA to
reconnect evacuees and workers to the internet. Many networks are set up to
provide Voice over IP telephones where landlines don't exist anymore. Where
there is internet, volunteers are creating internet kiosks and wifi hotspots
for people to be able to email or IM loved ones and use the internet to
register for aid and track down insurance claims. Also, the wireless
internet being put in place provides a logistical landscape for workers to
coordinate and stay in touch via email and IM.
