BTW - for anyone else looking to take advantage of the favorable Winter Bonus conditions in the San Gabriels, I have a few notes for traditional hikers without snow travel equipment.
As of Thursday the 18th:
Waterman and Kratka (via the ridge shortcut) were clear to the summit. You will see some snow, but just barely. You could easily walk around it if you wanted.
Mt. Williamson - interestingly had more snow patches on the trail but just a few and none more than 20-25ish feet long. The issue is that the ridge line right before the summit drops over to a North - North/Eastern facing slope and is extremely steep and narrow. I really slowed down and was cautious crossing this area. Snow is sticking here and is compacted and slippery/icy in spots. Next real snow accumulation and this will require additional gear for safety.
Mt Lewis is clear.
I didn't get a good look at the Islip approach.
Baden Powell and Throop - are now holding snow all along the Northern Flanks - which is where the all the trails are. They looked pretty well covered from the road.
Pine Mtn is holding snow.
Table Mtn - no snow.
Of course this will all change with any future snow accumulation and or CalTrans road closures.
