Hello.

I am looking for suggestions of make and model # of what SOTA activators might be using for GPS mapping, geo cache, etc. (example Magellan eXplorist 110 GPS)
I have been a long time chaser and looking to become an activator but don't want to get lost.
Can anyone recommend a GPS device that allows to store maps, provides Lat/Longitude, can show you the path you took to use when you are hiking down the mountain?
I know Garmin, Magellan, TomTom all make these devices.
I know about APRS but don't want to have to buy another HT
Color or black and white display?
Size of screen?
Any devices to stay away from?
Any websites you would recommend?
Any other comments?

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

I think the value of a dedicated GPS has diminished and I’ve been quite happy with my iPhone and Gaiagps.

That written I do carry a deLorme inReach more for “emergency” and sorting via text to the SOTA gateway.

Phone with Gaia GPS or BackCountry Navigator. If you really want a GPS, I’ll sell you my Garmin etrax20 for cheap.

What Paul said. I use my iPhone and Gaia app. You can plan routes on your desktop and they synch to your phone. I agree with ditching the GPS and for me I carry a paper map and compass when in unfamiliar and remote areas.

HTH & welcome to the fun part of SOTA in my opinion - activating.

I use Alltrail.com on the iphone, similar to Gaia, plan at home, then do the route.  I also used other people's route.  It was very handy for my Sheephead Mountain activation.  The other app is MotionX GPS for iPhone, has some other features.

I have a backup battery in my pack and... I have my Yaesu FT2DR GPS just in case I drop the phone or some other failure.  For long hikes, I mark the position of the car before I leave (a nice feature) so I can always get back.  I do print charts on longer treks because because I'm a freak.  I would not have found the ascent trail without alltrails app and if you don't find the trail, that mountain is not possible, the chaparral is unreal.

Not because you’re a freak, but because you’re smart. One should always have a paper map as backup in unfamiliar territory.
