I normally put in all of the QSOs that I had on SOTA activate.  Is that required?  Will the chasers still get the points if I don't log them?

I ask because I spent a while on the W6/SD-026 on 20 and I tried 40m so I have a lot of contacts (I do upload everything to QRZ).

Thanks.  Hope some of you guys got out there.

I usually use the SOTA Logger app on my phone to log contacts, so it's really easy to just import the entire log. If I log on paper, I just take one of the CSV files and update it in Excel, then batch import. Logging one-by-one is painfully slow.

Does it matter if you log them all? Not really, but I like to keep track of them all in the SOTA database.. It doesn't impact points, but it is possible to view what contacts were logged by chasers when you review your activator log. Likewise, chaser logs show an asterisk next to the points if the activator has exactly the same entry in their log. I just took a look at my chaser log, and I have very few asterisks, likely because I typically log chaser contacts after the fact and my time-stamp is not exact.

Bottom line - it doesn't matter much. Do what works for you.

My $0.02:  Its appropriate to log the contacts.  It’s not just for you to claim points, but also to get some confirmation for your chasers.

It also provides some nice statistical functionality.

Hey Adam,

I’ve been using the SOTA Goat app for a while now and unless I’m not seeing it, I don’t see a function to send to the SOTA site. Is the “SOTA Logger” app on iOS?

Thanks,

I’m with Nate on this one.

People don’t have to chase us and when they do I’m thrilled. It’s seems the least I can do is upload a record of the contact especially as some are quite keen to see their chase claim endorsed and validated.

Consider LoTW as another place to upload logs.

Agreed, I upload all my contacts in case the chaser ends up activating and we do a SOTA complete. And just because it’s my log too. 😉

Jerry, I couldn't tell you anything about iOS.  I'm using an Android device. The SOTA logger app makes it pretty easy though.

Ya, I searched for it on iOS but didn't see it so it must be an Android thing, which is a handy feature.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.  I'm with Jerry and others.  It's a yin/yang sorta thing for me.  I need them, they need me. I'm not so much in it for the points as I am for the great hiking and its the only way ham is fun for me.  My normal QTH has too much RF and the mountain top has zero.  I feel fortunate to be able to do this in SoCal.  A few weeks ago my contacts were shivering in below 0 temp.

It was a beautiful but windy day.  I activated W6/SC-445 today as the first activator.  The climb was a bitch but you could see for a million miles given the high winds.

I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t log the QSOs in SOTAData, as well as the other electronic confirmation services you use (LOTW, etc.)

Logging the QSOs is part of the contact.  It’s that way for both the chaser and activator.

I log all my QSOs using a PC program that uploads to QRZ.  The questions really revolved around entering the 40+ contacts into the SOTA site as it is a pain.  I haven't configured LOTW yet.

As it stands, I'm committed to getting them all in there... SOTA crashed just as I was about to press finish last night.  :)

Uploading one-by-one through the SOTA database UI is painfully slow.  I always use the CSV upload function. It's far more efficient.

My experience of SOTA Data crashing during qso entry is that once I re-logon the previous data is still available.

Agree isCSV is more efficient.

I log all my SOTA contacts in the database and upload using a CSV file format, quick and easy.

OK.  I feel stupid, but where is the CSV upload link found?

It’s a drop down option under the Summit Logs menu heading on the SOTA Dara landing page.
