Hello,

I live in San Diego and may have a chance to hike Onyx Peak and CT-045 (just south of Onyx).  Anyone have pointers for these?  I'm especially looking for a route up to CT-045.  My planned routes are in the link below.  The yellow line on CT-045 might be the best option but I'm looking for a little local knowledge.

Thanks mucho.

I’ve done both and this time of year onyx is basically a drive up and CT-045 has a great trail for nearly the whole route. I can pull some info on my maps and send it to you maybe by tomorrow if I can break free a little.

Chris,

Took the PCT up to the service road then followed the road to the peak. Tried to find the W6RIP short cut down but the XYL was reluctant to bushwack down....

I parked just to the south then followed a road to the PCT ... super easy to navigate. Hope this helps.

Probably more than you want but here are access routes to the peaks back there.

I did CT-045 last year but combined it with CT-047 and you'll see I parked back by the Jumpoff down Forest Road 1N02. (Cool old cabin back there.) I also have the PCT access track on this map.

The gate to Onyx has been closed the last few years.  I have accessed it both by walking the road up from the turnout (Park#2 on the map), but if you are comfortable with cross country, the last time I did it I just walked straight up from the parking pullout.

I took your advice and bushwhacked coming back.  I hate walking on granite roads, it's so hard on the feet.

As you can see from the track below, I chopped almost 2 miles off the trip.  I didn't start from the top mainly because it wasn't as inviting.  The route I took was a guess and very easy bushwhack.  I think I would rather go up that route than take the road.  I did this peak after CT-045 so I was already tired :)

Hope to see you at the next ARES love-in.

Two peaks in one day can be rough but you seem to be crushing it these days man so good job!  I was lucky when I did Onyx it was nearly a drive right up but was icey road and on the way down I had a hair raising moment when I nearly slid down the hill in my truck (F250 SD long bed crew cab that wasn’t stopping on a dime).  Suffice to say that area is actually pretty easy to navigate off trail in my opinion as long as you can avoid some of the up and down hills.

So happy we got the S2S yesterday and hope to work you again soon Chris.
