I have a question about the Yaesu FT2D and APRS auto position beacon.  I figure that SOTA geeks like us use APRS the most so here goes...

I can't figure out why sometimes auto-beacon works, and sometimes it doesn't.  That is... What are all the failure modes that would cause it to not work other than can't reach an APRS end-point?  This weekend it didn't work, when I got home I thought I would test to see if it was because the radio was locked.  It started working un-locked or locked so after reading both manuals, I'm mystified as to what I may be changing that keeps it from working.  I know that it wasn't an issue with APRS reception because I fired a manual position beacon while hiking.

I've checked the following:
  • Unit is in dual receive (not mono band as they call it)

  • APRS/16 Beacon Tx= AUTO
This can be changed at [F MW]/S.LIST/[MORE chicklet]/[BEACON] toggles

  • APRS/20 GPS power=on

  • APRS/24 set my position to GPS

I dunno about your rig, but on my vx8gr, you also have to choose another setting on the main aprs display. By pressing a button, it will change from manual to auto beacon. The icon that changes looks like a dot with a circle around it or something like that and is in the corner of the screen. Also, your beacon may not have gotten out depending where you were.
