My dear fellow giraffes,

I regret that I did not effectively pass the baton on organizing the camping trip, which is not happening.

I got buried with work (worked all last night and will need to continue working this weekend).  My needs for predictability (with my work schedule) and fun with all of you are not being well-met.

I hope this causes none of you too much inconvenience.

With an ache from an unfulfilled desire to have fun with you all out in nature,

Joe Houska

Hi Joe,

Wondering if this trip went? I just returned from a 10 day trip to Sequoias at primitive skills gathering I help facilitate. It's a place I share NVC in a big way. Wish I could have been in two places at once. Next year?

Hello wanna-be campers,

Without some help, the camping trip is unlikely to happen.

My work heated up right as I hoped to be doing the final planning for our camping trip next weekend of August 15-17.  I would like someone/s to take over, so that I can keep working and make it more likely that I can camp.

Here’s what I see needs to be done:

Most importantly, we need to figure out how to inform everybody of the location of our campsites.  Secondly, some group planning might result in better connections, food and fun!

Logistics—The priority need

The intent is to camp in first-come first-serve campsites in one of several campgrounds in the Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear Lake region that have such sites.  The challenge is to smoothly get the word to all interested campers, even though we won’t know exactly where, until we’ve staked out the sites.  This gets a bit tricky because cell phone coverage is unlikely in whatever campground we end up in.  And I’m not sure if there is a nearby location that will likely have coverage for all the various phone carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc).

The plan is for the first-to-arrive giraffes to find campsites and then get the word back to our community.  I’m imagining broadcast emails to soca...@googlegroups.com & LA...@yahoogroups.com and a post to https://www.facebook.com/groups/socalgiraffes/.  And I’m hoping that someone in the second wave, might make a physical posting on some yet-to-be-determined bulletin board that is along the road that most are likely to take to go to any of the considered campgrounds.

So, here are priority tasks that you or others might handle:

1.       Further refine the plan with more details

2.       Determine cell phone coverage up there & along the road (I think someone may have this info already)

3.       Determine the location of such a bulletin board (James, did you tell me that you know of a bulletin board at the base of the mountain?)

4.       Determining who is likely to be the first and second up and get them tasked

5.       Draft the emails and posts, so that they are as ready to go as possible, before we find the exact location.

6.       Other things to make this happen

Community planning – Another need

I’m imagining some planning might be cool for a Saturday night potluck dinner, or games, or music, or you tell the rest of us.

Any juice for any of this?

Joe
