Martin,  We are confirmed for Aug 1st at 9am for approximately 17 people for the kite rescue training.

Here are a few things we would like to go over:
-Basic kite rescue techniques
-Equipment familiarization
-Signs of a inexperienced Kiter
-Signs of a Kiter in distress
-How to arrest and deflate a kite

Let me know what you think or if you have anything else to add to the list. Thanks again for all your help Martin.

Hello scka + kiters!

I know some of you are busy with the Kite Expo event coming up, but wanted to let you all know and run this by you that we finally organised and allocated for this year a "rescue and safety training meet-up" with the lifeguards at http://www.usos.com for Sunset Beach. The date they have proposed is Monday August 1st, they'll run a routine training session from 8 to 9am and after they want us there (possibly a certified kite instructor and local kiters such as myself, etc -> the more the merrier) to give an interactive and collaborate lecture regarding kite-boarding safety focusing primarily on LG assistance towards us (kiters), this is no ordinary event and an incredible opportunity for us to come in and shine with our sport.

With that said, I'd like to ask for help from scka.org, anyone who would like to rise + volunteer to the occasion ?? ....and let me know so we can confirm asap with them.

Below is my info so if anyone is up for this you can reach out to me any time.

Thanks

Sincerely,
Martin Zoldano

A topic for consideration, or to squeeze in with another safety topic

“Approaching kiters with launched kites in the air.’ (On the beach or in the water) (…a safety issue):

Beginners need to be approached more cautiously than experts, who are more comfortable and in control in a larger variety of beach and weather conditions. A lifeguard needs to be aware that some kiters need a little more reaction time to safely respond inquiries’ or comments, or directives from authorities or the general public.    They can’t drop what they’re doing as quickly and as safely as the more experienced kiter. They’re not being rude or disobedient; they’re just trying to be safe.

…just a thought to maybe ease some stress & tension.

Sure, anyone who would like to be there and participate is more than welcome, the objective is for the sake of the future of our sport, things are getting tense and we can see friction growing so think about how we can contribute and improve in general starting with the life guards who have been doing a great job so far, and empowering them even more would be a crucial factor in maintaining a peaceful balance.

We're all set for Monday 1st at 9am, I know it's Monday morning which is hard for most people busy work schedule, however if anyone can participate let me know.

I've got two certified kite instructors lined up:
[1] Arnaud Vuillermet from www.kitemasters.com
[2] Bart Miller from www.socalkites.com

They both have already committed and we'll be arranging who talks on what soon, I'm not sure how long it'll take, with 17(-|+) people (including managers) I'm sure we'll have lots of questions so give or take 1+ hours.

Thanks

We had an amazing 1 1/2 hr training clinic today with Sunset Beach Lifeguards, overall the outcome is very positive!, they had very important questions and expressed a lot of interest to continue doing this twice per year, we really hope others follow along and get inspired from this event.

We'd like to thank : Arnaud Vuillermet (www.ikointl.com certified instructor) in...@kitemasters.com www.kitemasters.com + Bart Miller (www.ikointl.com certified instructor) in...@socalkites.com www.socalkites.com

for all their support and time offered, they did a great job and we look forward to having them next time.

You will soon start seeing immediate results and more involvement from them towards us regarding assistance in general, rule enforcements, etc, etc.

good news worth sharing

regarding "Signs of an inexperienced kiter", there was a beginner yesterday (with jean trunks, no board and grabbing a semi inflated old Naish-AeroII kite from the tip-end (flapping all over): ebay special maybe?!)

The lifeguard on tower 12th (who happened to be an attendee from Monday training, and without me telling him any sign of warning) approached me and said
"that dude looks like he is not carrying kite the way we were told last time, I'll call my superior to determine..."

I ( in the meantime) approached him nicely and asked if he had lessons? (explaining that by the way he was carrying and being so deflated, etc) and I got the attitude, explained a bit more the incidents and all the issues we got going on in our area, and his response was and I quote "I've been living in this area for more than 20 years and I've already taken lots of lessons at belmont and here", so I left him alone keeping an eye on him for a while

James drove up and asked me what/who/then, and he went and took care of biz, I almost felt like they could have taken care of the situation all by themselves

great to see these quick results.....thanks James and the other LG (do not know his name but soon to find out)

finally, bad news worth sharing too
sting-ray stung again! (seen lots lately), on antibiotics already, so shuffle and watch out

Martin

Good input on the results seem from the L.G.Training program, held Monday

…Sunset is also experiencing a large influx of stingrays in the shallows. I’m guessing its due to the severe drop in the water temp. They’re just trying to warm up in the shallow water close to shore.

Martin - unfortunately I think you were out on this water when the following happened. Sounds like your part of the story may have happened sometime before the following --

I was walking out to the beach near tower 12 with my kite backpack & pump getting ready to rig around 4:30 PM yesterday. As soon as I get a glimpse of the sand, I see a man being dragged quickly & uncontrollably on his back toward the houses. It was a man wearing shorts and t shirt (obviously had no intention of going in the water) and had the light grey Naish Aeroll dragging him. I yelled for him to pull his release and he was literally dragged all the way to the ice plant up against the houses. He didn't know how to use the 6 year old release system. (Nor did he have any kite leash!!!) Somehow the kite fell to the right side of the wind window when his body hit the ice plant. I ran and caught the kite (it was extremely underpumped). I approached him only to notice his spreader bar/hook was upside down! I explained to him as kindly as I could that he could have easily ended up in the houses. I explained the danger of the sport, the importance of lessons and the belmont lecture.... I made the ebay assumption as well - He said bought his kite from Steve at across the street when I asked.. Anyways, after this ordeal he packed up his kite.

Martin, from your previous email - it seems like it took two belmont lectures and a life threatening situation to get him to realize what he was getting into and pack up. Good thing the winds were sub 20 yesterday!

wow, I emailed James yesterday asking him details, he said he booted the guy, so this must have happened after he drove his truck off (assuming the guy would leave)
I was out there having a sesh and did not notice anything.
well, glad at least we're all doing our part and that nothing serious happened, another reason as to why we have to keep an eye wide open!

however, the L.G.s still did a great job, I'll bring it up to them and we'll discuss......(on this incident)

Martin,
Just got this email after I got off shift  today. Based on the information provided he didn't listen to anything myself and my LG's had said to him. I gave him the same speech and based on his skills told him he needed to head back to a beginner location. I took a quick southern patrol and when I came back he was packing up. I'll look into this tomorrow when I get to my headquarters. Please tell your guys thank you and we all appreciate the assistance in these type of situations. Great job. Hope the foot is healing well!

Kindest regards,

James

James,

Thanks for your patience and understanding, this is exactly the kind of situations where we probably did everything we could but
(in this particular instance) wasn't enough, for this culprit to ignore your warning and still risk it with relentless negligence is utterly unacceptable.
The fact that one of your LGs detected "an inexperienced kiter" on his own and escalated it asap, really speaks by itself on the progress from our training.

We all thank you again for being proactive, we'll soon discuss further at the beach about this, you guys are doing awesome!

Martin
