But we have a little more to work on now. Jared Diamond, in Collapse,
noted that when they first could test hard red winter wheat, back in the
50's, it was 26% protein. A few years ago, the sacks I got at the feed
mill were listed at 19%. and last year, I noted, sacks no longer said.
It was in the 50's that agribusiness and chemicals replaced the family
farms and what we now call 'organic' methods. Agribusiness got paid for
the tonnage, not the nutritional value of crops, and you can track the
decline in nutrition with the decline in academic performance. Since
then, scientific study revealed the neurotransmitters involved in laying
down new neural pathways during learning require a wide array of trace
minerals- iron, zinc, copper, manganese, etc and the micro nutrients
plants absorb from 'organic soils'.
Agribusiness doses the land with Nitrogen, Phosphorus, & Potash. [That's
a period] The trace minerals have been leached out long ago, so the
plants, which produce the weight measured at the grain mill, no longer
have the real nutrition. Needed to maximize childhood mental
development. Hence the decline in academic performance, the increase in
Autism, ADD, ADHD, etc, and the ratio of insane rants in the postings.
There are, of course, some parents that dont try to raise kids on sugar
cereals, junkfood, and soda; like most of the ranters were raised on. We
see some in my neck of Ozark woods, which still has lotsa family farms,
and also among the Amish. The national posted rate for Autism is now
nearly 1%. The rate in my neck of Ozark woods is something like 1:4000,
and among the Amish, 1:15,000.
This has something to do with why Robert Kaplan, in his study of the
military, "Imperial Grunts" reported half the Green Berets grew up on
family farms. This is but 1% of the total population providing 50% of
the nation's most competent soldiers. You'd think the Pentagon would
notice, but the brass are not, as any soldier can tell you, all that
competent, merely sociable enuf to suck up to the system.
S0- even if you are lucky enuf to be sane and compose rational policy
here, you are arguing with neurotic fools who cannot reason well enuf to
get it. This has a lot to do with why election campaigns have little to
do with policy proposals, and everything to do with sound bytes and eye
candy video.
Things in the USA would be much worse for it not for the fact that this
American malaise Carter saw has now become global, with so many other
economies being managed even more corruptly and ineptly.
Carter knew there was a problem, but now we have the fMRI brain scans
showing abnormal structures, abnormal bio-chemistry which creates a very
lucrative market for transnational pharmaceuticals selling drugs which
mask the real problems, and even the DNA markers which identify various
gene pools that manifest different syndromes like drugs, crime, moral
decay, and/or other forms of psychopathology.
We dont really have a functional republic any more, but a balance of
irrational powers trying to manipulate the public mind with no insight
into how their own minds are, and have been, manipulated. Neurotics are,
as Dr. Freud said, 'functional', in that they can operate within limited
parameters, and often able to block out any facts that dont comport with
preconceived notions, staying focused on the near term solutions. Which
has a lot to do with why all those Harvard MBAs completely missed the
coming of the recent financial debacle and the housing bubble.
Freud said it takes a traumatic event to wake a neurotic to reality. The
recent financial losses by small investors has done that, but so far,
they are still too neurotic to see beyond the rhetoric of Left or Right
wing partisans, attain a wider vision, and see any real solutions.
Thanks, good hearing from you.. this mess will not end well.

The only vote you have is with your money and a U-haul, to whatever
community you think has the most rational population and realistic
leadership. I recall some transnational auto outfits placing plants in
relatively rural areas with high ratios of small farm families. Smart.
Kids raised on farms get home to find a pitchfork rather than a game or
TV remote in hand, and know a thing or two about working for a living.
And if the proverbial schitt hits the fan, such obscure areas do far
better than any major metro. Even in WWII, there were rural villages and
towns that were completely ignored in the struggle for power. After the
rubble quit bouncing, their local infrastuctures were intact.
People who own land think they have an investment to protect, and all
thru history are most effective at defending it. You wanna be on their
side. Their kids are raised with the least exposure to bad diets. Many
of the small Ozark hill towns I know, dont even have fast food outlets.
I was born on a farm in 1939, and at 12 was given my first rifle; that
still is a standard rite of passage, and beats the fuck out of the
street guns urban kids mite get their hands on in any real shoot out.
And, because these rural communities are more stable, businesses have
seen it more profitable to invest there, creating jobs while the rest of
the economy stagnates or tanks. So- even if you have retirement benefits
or whatever, the local job market supports the mortgages, so housing and
real estate prices are more stable- better investments.
The census bureau reports the fastest growing demographic is the "x-urb"
people who've moved out of urban areas to invest in the rural fringe. If
we do see the crash you worry about, there's some chance the system will
be able to keep urbanites out of the way while local farmers provide the
food everyone needs, and with that the infrastructure- tractor and truck
repair, feed/grain mills, livestock sales, and other such necessities of
real life urbanites dont understand how to invest in.
YMMV. And if they keep it together despite how bad it looks, you havent
lost anything. The hunting and fishing will still be good.

And most of those parents, were they to come to the direct attention of
a child-welfare agency, would probably be judged as abusive to their
children.

That's one of the truly scary parts. Those in whom we have placed our
trust are part of the problem.

This states that part of the problem pretty well.

There has yet to be any real trauma. There has been, thus far, only
huge inconvenience. Not too many people are starving in the streets.
Yet. When it comes to that, then we will see who comes to and who
remains dozing.
