"Oh, there were a few highlights. A pair of octogenarian lesbians
kicked off the proceedings in San Francisco, and even though you
couldn't help thinking that they were chosen because their age made
them so adorable, it was still pretty moving to see a couple who had
been together for more than 50 years finally be allowed to marry."
That would be Del and Phyllis, I gather from other sources.

I think that's surprising, too, but on the other hand where
would they have learned?

It's hard to imagine. Even my straight male partner knew they were
important, pre-Stonewall activists.

She's not a "reporter," she's a critic writing about the way
the weddings were covered in TV news. And yes, it makes a
difference: if the television coverage didn't mention it she
wouldn't have any cause to know that Martin and Lyons are
other than a pair of adorable old women who've spent a
lifetime together.
On the one hand, I know reading about lesbian history since the age of
sixteen or so is unusual; on the other hand, surely there was a press
release or two just *mentioning* a bit more about them.

I don't think that the particular quote necessarily indicates that the
writer doesn't know who they are. The headline for the Chronicle story
was "Same-sex weddings start with the union of elderly San Francisco
couple". They then identified the couple. But the LA Times article
wasn't about that wedding, it was about the TV coverage of the general
phenomenon. A lot of the media has emphasized how "ordinary" the events
are - so the activist cred of Del and Phyllis is sort of less important
for *that* story than there status as longtime lovers finally wed.

so, yea. and yea for my governor, who's directed that NYS acknowledge
same-sex marriages, and boo for my assembleyman, one of the
co-sponsors of a bill opposing paterson.
