LONDON - The revelation that a mole within al Qaeda was exposed after
Washington launched its "orange alert" this month has shocked security
experts, who say the outing of the source may have set back the war on
terror.
Reuters learned from Pakistani intelligence sources at the weekend that
computer expert Mohammad Naeem Noor Khan, arrested secretly last month, was
working under cover to help the authorities track down al Qaeda militants in
Britain and the United States when his name appeared in newspapers around
the world.
"After his capture he admitted being an al Qaeda member and agreed to send
emails to his contacts," a Pakistani intelligence source said.
"He sent encoded emails and received encoded replies. He's a great hacker
and even the US agents said he was a computer whiz."
Last weekend US officials said someone held secretly by Pakistan was the
source of the bulk of the information justifying the alert.
The New York Times obtained Khan's name independently, and US officials
confirmed it when it appeared in the paper the next morning.
None of those reports mentioned that Khan had been under cover helping the
authorities catch al Qaeda suspects, and that his value in that regard was
destroyed by making his name public. ..."

What's with you guys? Liberals are Americans. We have much more of a stake
in America's success than you do. So why would we want the U.S. to fail? It
just doesn't make sense to normal people. We don't have to want the Bush
Administration to fail. That they were able to do completely on their own.

Announcing the threat publicly warns them off to strike later - maybe by
surprise.
If the threat is not specific them there is no way to mount a defense, so
the warning is useless. Actually it is worse than useless, for (as in this
case) it is likely that information will be conveyed to the terrorists about
sources and methods.
Neither the British with the IRA nor the Israelis ever announced terrorist
threats They thought it was better to capture the terrorist than tog et a
political bump for looking vigilant.

expert.
Second, many here have urged just that policy.
Third, the present system is ineffective.
Fourth, why would anyone object to arresting people against whom we had
evidence of a conspiracy to commit murder?

Florida was calculated to prevent panic? Aren't recurrent vague warnings
