I don't trust food products from China, but U.S. farm products are
probably not much safer.
The outbreak of the 'Mad Cow' prion disease caused the U.S. government
to prohibit the practice of feeding cow scraps to cows - particularly
the most hazardous organs, such as brain and spinal tissue. But it
would be inefficient to throw away those protein-filled tissues, so
they process them into chicken feed instead.
While chickens are not susceptible to prion diseases, prions are
indigestible and build up in tissues like other toxins, and a mammal
who eats prion-infected chicken (or even fish) can develop prion
disease.
As you probably have noticed, birds shit a lot and their droppings
contains lots of undigested material. It would be inefficient to
waste all those undigested carbohydrates and proteins, so chicken
droppings are collected and mixed with chicken scraps and processed
into cattle feed, including any bovine prions the chickens ingested.
This practice is unhealthy and disgusting, and only slightly better
than Chinese farming in that political prisoners and melamine are not
added to the processed animal feed. But if you ever wondered why
'organic' meat costs 5x as much as 'regular' meat, this is why.

All food products should have a label of origin, then the people can
choose what to buy. Of course countries like Mexico and China are
against this.

Yes, I do.
Do you remember all the *people* who died from eating food intended for
human consumption, grown and packed in the USA?
Do you remember the Swedes and Norwegians who died or suffered liver damage
after consuming food supplements made in California?
Perhaps you should also consider having US-made food products subject to
effective controls, too.
Just a thought.
But wait... effective controls might cost something, and either prices or
taxes would rise. So that idea is probably off the table.

I live in Canada, and I can't really think of any food products that don't
list their country of origin. I very regularly see food products labelled
as products of Mexico and China (and pretty much of everywhere else that has
a functioning economy and arable land).
So I have to say that I'm really not sure you're on solid ground with that
particular assertion about resistance to labels coming from Mexico and
China.
Anyway, here's a handy tip: Labels of origin don't guarantee either quality
or safety.
You're going to need something more than a sticker to do that.

You already have a food inspection program. I certainly agree that it was
seriously weakened by US governments.
The real question is whether you are *willing to pay for a better one*,
since most of the serious outbreaks of food-borne disease in the US come
from products *produced in the US*.

FDA inspections have not been "done away with". In addition, food
inspections are also State and municipal responsibilities. But no matter
who actually performs the inspection, they're probably going to want to be
paid for it.

too, are in favour of increased Government oversight of your food system,
and the higher taxes and/or prices that necessarily go with that.

Apparently you don't understand that my comment simply responds to the
previous poster's claim of "resistance to labelling by Mexico and China" and
shows that that claim has no real basis, and is likely fabricated. Both of
those nations abide by labelling rules to sell their products in other
countries.
In addition, US law since 1930 has required country of origin labelling on a
wide variety of food products. Hpowever, one of your underlying problems
is that your laws do not always require labels on processed foods to
identify the sources of the components. So, a food product such as a hot
dog, for example, might carry a "made in USA" label but really contain meat,
filler, or chemicals from anywhere.
Finally, it's really your problem if you don't care that the food supply of
other nations is more secure than yours, and it's your problem if think that
shutting out foods from other nations does anything at all about the
problems you have with food produced within your borders.
