Just read some really terrific books:

SIZE WISE by Judy Sullivan

THIN IS JUST A FOUR LETTER WORD by Dee Hakala

JUST THE WEIGH YOU ARE

All very size positive--last one is written by an
MD speciailizing in weight issues saying (listen
hard here dorkman) DIETS DON'T WORK. IT IS NOT AS
SIMPLE AS CALORIES TAKEN IN/CALORIES EXPENDED. (Duh--
like anyone here doesn't know that except ol' dippy
the j??)Talks about yes, you can be fat AND fit! (so
does THIN IS...) Surprise--just what we all ready knew...

Really good reads--all available at Amazon.com.

-snip-

I haven't read the first one, but Dee Hakala's book is quite good. I just had
the library order it for our collection and it already has been checked out by
someone other than me (I've been doing some stealth activism, I'm trying to
counteract all the weight loss books the library has been ordering. So far,
they've ordered every book I've requested).

I checked books in print on the last book. There are 2 books by that title. I
am assuming you are recommending the one by Steven Jonas as it was written in
1997. The full title is "Just the weigh you are: how to be fit and healthy,
whatever your size". The other book is just titled "Just the weigh you are"
by Eilene Wegeleben. I haven't read either one yet, I just placed and order
to get them from another library to read before requesting our library to buy
them (or not. The Jonas book definately sounds size positive, but I don't
really have any info on the other book. It was written in 1986 and BIP lists
other keyword entries for the book: reducing diets. So we'll see).

And for those who aren't able to buy them, I strongly recommend your local
library. If they don't have the books, see if they have an interlibrary loan
service and they can borrow the books from another library.

If we're going to mention books, can I mention mine?

Published in 1994, but still available through Amazon.com

It's called: All Shapes and Sizes: Promoting Fitness and Self-Esteem in your
overweight child.

It is for parents of fat/large/heavy children (sorry about the overweight,
the publisher insisted on it because they thought it was the word people
would identify with), but it is about accepting that children, like adults
come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the myths about health problems, etc.
are shot down and there are suggestions for promoting healthy eating and
helping kids to be more active. Might be of interest to some, anyway.

THIN IS JUST A FOUR LETTER WORD is one of my favorite books! Another
great thing about it is you can write to her at her AOL address (which I
can't find--guess it's time to clean!) and get her handouts, etc. if you
want them.

I found it great for motivating me to move.--Eva Whitley (and looking
forward to getting those other books...)
