"Jeffrey, I haven't time to explain," said Grandma
Gertrude, swinging my bedroom door open without so
much as a knock. "Come with me."
"But you said I had to stay in my room all day," I
said as she pulled me by my hand down the hallway.
"I've come up with something better," she assured me
as we descended the stairs.
In the living room sat a woman about my mother's age.
A petite woman with curly brown hair, she seemed like
she might be part Asian.
She stood up and opened her arms to me, smiling.
"I'm Beatrice Toto," she said, giving me a hug. "Miss
Toto to you. You must be Jeffrey."
"Miss Toto is the sister of Mrs. Randall next door,"
my grandmother explained. "Miss Toto teaches in
Arkansas. I'll make some lemonade while you two get
acquainted. Beatrice, tell Jeffrey about 'in loco
parentis' in the town where you teach."
As Grandma Gertrude excused herself to the kitchen,
Miss Toto sat down and patted her lap.
I sat, even though sitting on laps was embarrassing
for an 8-year-old like me.
"Back in Arkansas -- in the small town where I teach
-- we have 'universal in loco parentis.'"
"What's that?"
"'In loco parentis' means that teachers can act in the
place of parents. That means teachers can punish
children, just like parents can. 'Universal in loco
parentis' means that teachers can spank school-age
children, whether they are at school or not."
"Well, what if the parents are like mine? What if they
don't believe in spankings?"
"Well," laughed Miss Toto, "back in Arkansas, nearly
every parent believes in spankings. But even if they
didn't, I can still spank their children at school and
anywhere else."
"Gosh! My mom won't even let Grandma Gertrude spank me
and I'm gonna be here all summer."
"What a coincidence!" replied Miss Toto with a broad
smile. "I'm spending my vacation with my sister next
door. Sounds like your Grandma Gertrude could use some
help, too."
"Help with what?"
"With this," said Miss Toto, putting me upon my feet.
She had my short pants and underwear down to my ankles
in a jiffy.
Since this was my virgin spanking, I had no idea what
was going on, not even when she pulled me over her
lap.
This simply could NOT be happening to me!
Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack!

But it was...

I howled and kicked and tried to cover my bottom...

But, of course, Miss Toto had dealt with the likes of
me before...

"Grandma-aa-aah help-ppp me-eee-eee!"

By the time Grandma Gertrude arrived from the kitchen
with the lemonade, I was sobbing softly on Miss Toto's
lap, my shorts and underpants still wadded around my
ankles.
"Well, Jeffrey," said Grandma Gertrude, putting down
the serving tray on the coffee table, "I see Miss Toto
explained 'universal in loco parentis' to you."
"She SPANKED me!" I sniveled.
"Why yes, Jeffrey," replied my grandmother with a
sweet smile. "I could hear everything quite clearly in
the kitchen."
"I'm telling my mommy!"
Whereupon Miss Toto upended me again over her lap and
spanked me quite vigorously.
After I completed the requisite sobbing and sat again
on Miss Toto's lap, I foolishly complained again.
"My mommy and my daddy don't believe in spankings.
They said you can't spank me, Grandma."
"Of course, dearie," she replied. "And I shan't. But
Miss Toto is well within her rights."
"By the authority vested in me by the State of
Arkansas and by my local school board," added the
schoolteacher. "I do, indeed, have spanking
privileges."
"But, Miss Toto, we aren't in Arkansas anymore," I
protested. "This is Orlando."
Whereupon Miss Toto positioned me over her lap and
administered a third spanking.
"As you can see," said my grandmother when I had
calmed down enough to listen, "our neighborhood is
like a little piece of Arkansas, right here in
Florida. You'll be seeing a lot of Miss Toto this
summer."
And so I did.
